@Mrs. Blue: My sister and I grew up in a very small community with few opportunities for activities. Before high school, we only had one year of schooling where we weren't in the same class. Also, we lived far out of town, so if one of us wanted to do an activity, like sports, we both did it. This meant that we didn't have a lot of time to do our own things. School and sports came a lot easier for me, which I know made it harder for her too. Plus, we were both overweight and got teased a fair amount.

Advice that I would offer: let each twin have the chance to pursue their own interests. When possible, put them in different classrooms so that there is less comparison. Let them spend time apart.

Haha... I was going to say, no... but I think it must be cool to have a twin! The one thing I wish our child could experience is the large family gatherings both DH and I did. We're both only children but had large extended Italian families. LO won't have that... and it sucks. :(

I feel bad for non-twins! I wish I was a twin so pity part for one! :)

The thing I enjoyed about growing up that I wish others would get to was seeing my older half siblings every third weekend. I would get SOOO excited for them to come stay with us and the time flew by when they were there. My happiest childhood memories were Saturdays that started with waking up and realizing they were in the house!

@mrbee: heehee. good thread. You should write a blog post about growing up as a twin!!! Maybe @Mrs. Blue will name her boys after you ;)

The one unusual experience I had growing up was growing up in a predominantly caucasian town (there were only a handful of minority families in the entire town... I was one of only 3 non-adopted asians in my class. I was the Korean, there was one Japanese, and one Chinese). I've always felt that this 2nd generation Asian experience, especially in such a homogeneous suburban environment, is something that has definitely shaped me and is worth exploring and writing about, but maybe a little later on in life after things have settled down and I can look at the experience in hindsight, which as we all know is 20/20 :)

@mrbee: Have you read "Tadd and Todd" by Dr. Seuss? It was reprinted in "The Bippolo Seed" compilation that came out a year ago. Maybe a way to share a bit of your experience with your kids (in characteristic Seussian rhyme).

@boiledpnut: We're pretty close. We don't live together and wear matching shirts, but we email and IM regularly. It's been a net positive for me over the years... I've worked recently to break the older/younger dynamic between us, which has given our relationship a fresh adult dynamic, I think.

@boiledpnut: I am also a younger twin (by four minutes). It's interesting how those few minutes have such a big impact!

My twin didn't make a big deal out of being older though. It was more just me embracing the younger position. I came to see being younger as a gift though, after reading a book about birth order in my 20s!

@mrbee: I wish I had a better twin experience. In all honestly, my sister was a bully to me growing up (and still kind of is). I'm not sure how we ended up SO different. We used to be really close, talking on the phone everyday, but then something happened. I'm still not sure what though. And quite frankly, while I do miss my sister, I don't miss walking on eggshells around her.

@boiledpnut: Yup, that all sounds really familiar. :) There were/are a lot of negatives of being a twin. We ended up going to different colleges and into different careers, which helped us a lot with our identities... otherwise it would've continued to be tricky.

That said, I've never met an identical twin before who didn't feel the positives outweighed the negatives! Interesting...

Nope! I'm an identical twin and my twin and I do not get along. We are like night and day. It was hard to develop our own identities growing up. People would always refer to us as "the twins" instead of our own names. Many thought that just because I was good at something meant my sister was too, and vice versa. I wouldn't wish being a twin on anyone, even if we did get along.
