Like some others have said, I feel more pressure to stop. It's normal here for women to breastfeed until 6mo and then switch to formula (which was my initial goal, but then bf became easy). I don't want that added expense and all the faffing around with bottles and quantity that comes with it, not to mention a decrease in quality. I would like to continue bf until LO is 1, which coincides with when I go back to work.

I find bf less demanding now at 7 months (sometimes LO even goes 3hrs between feeds, ooooh) but yes, I'd like the increased freedom of not being the main source of nutrition. However, I am willing to keep going because the advantages outweigh the disadvantages for us.

With my second one I put pressure on myself to continue even though the MSPI plus a couple other things diet was hard. I sort of felt like I owed it to him since I had BF his brother for a long time. Luckily with time he both started to outgrow some issues plus the feedings got more spaced out so in the end it wasn't too bad.

I put a ton of pressure on myself to breastfeed. My husband and family didn't really care either way. Those first couple months were so hard, but I'm glad I continued with it. Now that she's 12 months, I would like to start weaning, especially since she is still on a dairy restriction...and I want some cheese!

I feel pressure to nurse until she self-weans like I did with S (he self weaned at 16 months). I feel for some reason like any less isn't "fair" which is really silly.

@winniebee: Omygosh. I felt like a new woman when it went from 2 to 3 hours between feedings. Then an even newer woman when it spaced out to every 4 hours! Who knew one hour could make such a difference! Hang in there... :bummed: the restricted diet makes it doubly hard.

My son is 14mo and we only nurse in the mornings now. I would LOVE to quit entirely since he is a really annoying nurser who is constantly groping me. But when I go into his room in the morning, the first thing he says is, "Nuh! Nuh!" (That is how he says the word "nurse".) So I guess I feel pressure from my nursling to continue!

I am going on a 3-night business trip in a week, and I may try to just wean him completely when I get back. We'll see.

I put pressure on myself to keep going.

It will feel amazing past the 6 month mark because you could probably drop down to 4 feedings soon! The difference between every 3 hours vs every 4 is HUGE.

Like others have said I put the most pressure on myself. I think a lot of it is because it's what my mom did. My mom died 3 years ago so she isn't adding pressure. But more that I think how proud she would have been to have me follow in her footsteps.

With that said I'm not on any type of restricted diet and I'm sure if I was like you it would be a lot harder to keep it up.

No, because although it's demanding sometimes, I see it as the best option for my child and it doesn't cost any money! I'll have my body to myself for the rest of my life so I'm okay with nursing as long as my kids want to (within reason). :-P so far they have weaned themselves at 19 months and 16 months.

Yes because it's cheaper than buying formula. I am 8 months in. My initial goal was 6 months but I am trying to make it a year. I think it would make day to day activities easier if I didn't have to pump but I am trying to hang in there.

I put SO much pressure on myself. The BF itself has been pretty easy for me, but the pumping and constantly worrying about whether I am producing enough for his bottles has been agonizing. DS is just over 11 months in and the pressure got to be too much. I'm now working on night weaning DS and pump weaning myself. I am still planning to BF for a while longer, but I prioritized my need to sleep and get work done during the day.

Nope! We don't live near family or anyone that was pregnant/with a baby when DS was an infant. I was also the first in my family to BF so I got a lot of push back to not BF when I was pregnant.

I think I put the pressure on myself. I was determined to get to a year, and really, I think we could have quit earlier and it would have made life so much easier. But I felt just like you, I could do it and was making enough pumping at work and nursing while home, so really I should, right? I know I would have felt guilty if we had quit earlier, but I shouldn't. And neither should you! Just like everything else that comes with parenting, it is completely your choice. And you know what, your LO is going to be fine, either way!!

@T.H.O.U.: That's a good idea. He gets a bottle of pumped milk a day and I could probably change that to formula so I don't have to pump....but I CAN pump so it seems like I should. There I go again putting pressure! Also even at 5 mos R nurses every 2.5 - 3 hours (MAX) during the day so it's definitely still a lot. Hoping with solids that will slow down a touch.

I would think about just cutting back. Maybe from 6-8 months give a bottle. from 8-10 months give two bottles and by 10-12 months do half and half. See how something like that goes. For me when I'm ready to throw in the towel, giving myself a little slack and a small break can make the world of a difference.

I don't feel pressure from anyone but myself. He is thriving on breastmilk and, while I logically know that formula would be JUST as good, I can't bring myself to not make it to a year (especially almost 9 months in).

What I will say is that I've been surprised how long a year seems when you are feeding someone (either nursing or pumping) every 3 to 4 hours. His first year has flown in terms of him, but it's hard to believe I've gotten this far and I still have THREE months left until a year. I don't know if that makes sense at all.

My goal with R was to get to 6 months. We are almost there! I can't believe it considering how hard BF was with my first. Since I'm currently SAH I feel a little pressure to keep going to a year / not supplement....since I'm home with him and it's still easy I feel like I should. It's not that I dislike BF but it's demanding and I'm on a restricted diet for him and man...it would be nice to have my body back. I'll probably keep going after 6 months for as long as we are both happy, though.
