If there is an abundance of mistakes then yes (hello twilight), if there are just a few or not completely obvious ones, then no.

I read and loved the first 2 game of thrones novels. My husband is on the first one and has picked up on a mistake that's continued throughout the book. The author uses "would of" instead of "would have" and we are both under the impression that "would of" is incorrect. We might be wrong, but either way, he's having trouble finishing the book because of it. Which makes me laugh.

Yes. Drives me INSANE. How many times have they been re-read, edited, chopped and changed... And no one noticed they'd put "your" instead of "you're" multiple times?!

I would love to be a book editor (or whoever looks for errors like that). It's pretty much my dream job. I've edited 2 books for free already. "Workshopped" he called them. So much fun.

@prettylizy: that's different! Books, articles etc are supposed to be polished and error-free because they're published in a professional environment. Not stuff like this! ;)

Yes, they drive me batty! In another life, I would be a book editor. That is one thing that drives me insane about the Kindle versions.

My textbooks at work always have errors, I keep a running list for new editions since I usually know someone involved with the book.

When I find them I go through two phases. First, I just stare at it in disbelief, like maybe I just misread it? Then I'm just irritated and can't help but know that at least two people (author and publisher) failed at their job.

@Mrs. Pen: lol - there will always be a mistake or two, but it irks me when they're just all over!

And I have noticed it more in kindle versions, which pisses me off even more.

@Sweet T: Yes! Exactly. Ugh.

I used to work with a lady who would complain when I proofed her work and correct her comma use. They were always in the wrong place! I could hear her mumble, "take out a comma, put in a comma - who cares??" Well, I was a proofreader, so I cared. She was a magazine editor, so she should have cared too.

@Mrs. Jacks: that is one of my biggest issues with kindle versions! I know it's easier to proof on- paper; I don't proof anything for work on screen - but would it kill them to print a paper copy and check it against the e-version?

I find a medium amount I think... But someone with the same literary taste as me at the library has a real eye for scrutiny -and corrects the text. Though a few times I've disagreed with her edits.

I'm reading Team of Rivals on the Kindle right now and random capitalization and spacing problems are *killing* me right now. I can't believe that Doris Kearns Goodwin's editors would be so careless, so I hope it's just the Kindle version riddled with issues.

I wouldn't say I find them a lot, but I definitely notice them if they're there. It always surprises me. You're being paid to write this book and someone else is being paid to proof your writing. I expect you to use correct spelling and punctuation.

Yes! I find it so unprofessional and it makes my opinion of the author plummet. Right or wrong, it makes me feel like, how solid can they be if they go through a publishing house that is either lazy or uneducated on what its job is supposed to be?

I worry that the Internet is making people feel like proper grammar, spelling, etc doesn't matter because people understand what you mean. So now poor writing skills are everywhere. I was on Martha Stewart's site today and one if the big display lines said "kitchen cuboard." On what's supposed to be a professional site! And I'm reading Baby 411 and it's riddled with errors which makes me feel like all their advice is crappy.

I am reading a book now and it's riddled with mistakes. I am not sure why it bothers me so much!

Part of it is that I'm never sure what to do about the typos. Should I contact the publisher? Do they already know? Am I the only person in the world who agonizes over stuff like this??

Do you find a lot of typos and grammatical mistakes in the books you read? How do you handle it when you find a mistake?
