My LO hasn't been seen by any residents but a lot of our friends are at that stage in training. Mostly it's been fine but we def have a few 'book smart' friends without kids who have tried to factoid us on various parts of birth/parenting and we've had to play a bit of a 'look it up' challenge. Luckily that, probably coupled with a bit of a dirty look on my part, has been enough to get them to at least reexamine how they communicate with us just as friends, hopefully that translates also how they communicate with patients.

It's kinda of a shame when you go to an expert and feel like you have to double check everything, but at least you have confidence in the main doctor. Hopefully your experiences will broaden the training of the residents.

@sera_87: Ha I didn't dare mention BLW. It was bad enough I said I was going straight to purees. The supervising doc didn't mind though, she said: "You're from England, they do things like that there."

I LOVE our pedi! I think she's a great mix, and she always asks for parents input before making a recommendation or drawing a conclusion. She's great about encouraging "mommy/daddy instinct."

We go to a teaching practice too - I find the docs know what they're talking about and the residents, ummm, not so much. Ply I'm not the best "patient" - when they ask how many times he's fed a day I'm like "whenever he's hungry? It varies. I don't keep track". And it depends on who you get - one resident tsk tsked about co sleeping, another was much more laid back after the standard disclaimer.

And blw? Fooorrrget it.

@Mrs. Jacks: I try to be very respectful to the residents because I know they have to learn and it's SO important they learn but sometimes I wish they would think before they speak. The supervising doctor might try to undo the damage they cause but often all I can think about is what the resident said, not the "I'm not worried about her weight, at all" to supervisor said afterwards. It's been harder for me at her hip appointments because the residents are still learning how to examine/ultrasound her properly so take ages and then she cries. Again, I know their learning is SO important, but it's hard to sit and watch.

Our pedi is definitely book-smart, but in a very warm, very open to other ideas way. She's probably around my age, give or take a few years, and doesn't have children yet.

Residents, I hate to say it, are still learners. I don't take their counsel too seriously :) (No offense to any residents, there are occasionally some who are parents and really know what they are talking about). I cringe at the type of things I said as a resident!

@BelugaBean: That is such a great way to look at it!

@Lozza: That's funny, the doctors were giving a lot of time to telling us to sleep train at our four month appointment, too! I honestly think A seems to little to sleep train right now, but I think that must be the age that's taught....

All of the pediatricians I've seen at our practice have been great, but I do see this with friends of ours who are pediatric residents- they'll say stuff like "oh, I'll never use a pacifier with any kids I have" or "when we have kids, we'll definitely sleep train at 4 months" and while they may well do those things, I think they seem to lack a little of the experience of "not all things work- or are best- for all kids" that they'll gain once they've worked with more families.

I absolutely love our pediatricians office. The NP I meet with most often has 3 of her own kids, and was just a surrogate for another family. We talk through everything and she offers advice, but also lets me make the final decisions with my daughter when it comes to thinks like what to feed and when. The nurses on the call line are great as well, and they are open 363 days a year. We hit the jackpot with this group!

@travelgirl1: I think you're right though that your situation has probably helped you gain confidence in yourself and trusting your skills as a mom.

LO is only about 8 weeks so we've only had a handful of visits but she strikes me as drawing more from experience just based on her approach and some of the things she's said.

We go to a larger pediatric practice and I can tell the difference with the newer/younger doctors. One we saw when DS was two months old ran the appointment like it was straight out of a clinical exercise she took. Flopped his body around and was all by the books. Insisted that he did not have allergies or reflux (has both) and acted like my mommy opinion did not matter. I refused to go back to her. We ended up seeing her a few weeks ago at an "emergency" appointment and I was very nervous. To my surprise she was great! Compassionate and really seemed to gain some experience in the almost 2 years since we saw her. Our primary pedi is amazing and has TONS of experience. It was a blessing to get DS in with him as he is closed to new patients but I am glad he agreed to take DS on as a patient and follow his case.

I find that our peds is a mix of both. He has a daughter a few months older than LO. We were kind of jealous of his daughter because he talks about what a great sleeper she is and didn't have colic which is the opposite of our experience.

He didn't pressure us to CIO, but suggested it. He's careful not to say that we must do something, but strongly suggests it. He answers our questions well and also mentions recent publications, etc. I like him a lot for LO. Other doctors and nurses in the practice have also been awesome for us.

This is why I love LO's doctor. He has like a million kids (okay, he has like 4 or 5) so he has experience, he's book smart, and he seems to be caught up on more recent guidelines. He's never judged us on our decisions and he always tells us what he would do and what's recommended to do but that we should go with our gut as long as it's safe and healthy for LO. I was worried about asking to skip rice cereal and he said that we want older children and adults to eat more fruits and vegetables so why not do the same for LO. I think it was that moment that I was definitely glad we found the doctor we did (LO also likes him which is a huge plus).

I kind of wish my Dr. was more up on recent publications/recommendations. When we went in for E's 4 month appt they suggested we start cereal, per the AAPs guidelines. When I told them the new guideline was 6 months they had no clue. Our Dr. is a really nice guy, and his real world experience is obviously really helpful, but I think it makes him stuck in his ways a bit too.

We take A to a family doctor's unit at a teaching hospital so we usually see a resident nurse and doctor, then the supervising doctor. I love, love, love our supervising doctor, she has 2 kids herself and talks a lot of sense, but the residents stress me out. They are very hung up on what the books say, and tell me to supplement with formula then look confused when I say A won't take a bottle (the supervising doctor then came in and said there was no need to supplement at all -she'd dropped a weight percentile but was still gaining). A resident also kicked up at me when I said we were skipping cereal and going straight to purees but not till 6 months. Again, supervising doctor was totally fine with this, but by the time she comes in the room, the residents have usually stressed me out a lot. In all though, she gets good care and it has taught me to research more myself and stand by my decisions. I wonder if it has the opposite effect on some mums, and they end up going against what they actually want.

Do you find your doctors are more caught up in text books? Or past patient/their own life experience?
