@hilsy85: are you being more active during the day? Because ever since its gotten warm out, we play a LOT more and he gets exhausted. He's been taking 2.5h naps and sttn just fine. I think it's their age because they've become a ton more active and they are wearing themselves out ;)

@hilsy85: Oops! I must be mixing him up with someone else's lo! At 7 months that would DEFINITELY be too much daytime sleep for my lo! But everyone is different, it sounds like your lo just likes to sleep a lot! Woohoo!

I really never wake him up from a nap, honestly. I figure if he's sleeping longer than normally, it's because he is trying to make up for sleep or because he is fighting an illness. He STTN though - sometimes he will wake up earlier than usual if he naps a lot, but it's not that bad. That said, I really try to make sure he is up by 4 p.m. or otherwise bedtime is too late. At home, he usually takes about 3 hours worth of naps and he's 12 months.

@googly-eyes: he's almost 7 months :)

Ok, well yesterday he napped for a total of 4 hours 20 minutes and had an AWESOME night's sleep! So maybe he just has really high sleep needs...I guess I won't be waking him up anymore!

LO is welcome to sleep as much as she wants, but not past a certain time. She does best if her last awake period is at least 4 hours, so I try not to let her sleep past 4pm unless we will need her to stay up later than that for whatever reason. Yesterday she had almost 4.5 hours worth of naps. Today it was about 1.5 hours.

While there is a such thing as being overtired, at five months (I think that's how old your lo is?) that would have definitely affected her overnight sleep if she was sleeping that much every day. But every baby is different so if it hasn't been so far I'd say you're safe and to deal with it if/when it becomes a problem.

I followed the moms on call method which says that beyond 2 months naps should never last beyond 2 hrs... which yours don't. Maybe let him have his second nap up to 2 hrs as well? My MIL also tried to tell me never wake a sleeping baby... It's hard to know what to do! SIGH.

the past couple of weeks DS' naps have been all wonky. some days he'd sleep 3x 1 hour each, some days he'd sleep 2 - a catnap and a 2 hour+ nap.

none of it affected his nighttime sleep!

the only thing i'd watch is the last nap coinciding too closely to bed time!

I've also become a believer in 'sleep begets sleep!' Since LO's morning naps have become longer and regular, she's been sleeping up to 7.5 hrs straight a night. (She's EBF and 3mos old) I won't wake her from her morning nap anymore and I'll only wake her from an afternoon nap now if it's been a while and she's in that weird sleep phase where she's trying to wake herself up and getting a little fussy in her sleep. I was in a bad cycle for a while where I was convinced I had to wake her to eat and since I stopped she sleeps better for naps and nights.

@hilsy85: Generally a short one from 5:30-6:15ish after I pick her up from daycare and while I'm getting dinner ready. Then it's "keep her up!" mode until bedtime. I usually do my best to keep her awake from 6:30pm until bedtime around 9.

@hilsy85: DD is 7 months too. We've been doing 2 longer naps and dropping the 3rd because it was getting too close to bedtime. Now on a good day she'll nap 9-11ish and 2-4ish and bed at 7. If her first nap is bad then we get a little messed up but it's been working pretty well.

@hilsy85: Yes! This is our problem most nights too. He'll sleep until 3:30 when he usually wakes up to eat, and if I go by the 2 hour rule, he'll go down at 5:30. Sometimes he doesn't want to go down, and we feed him his dinner at 6, so we can't let him go past then either. That's usually when we'll skip the night time nap. He can get super cranky sometimes, but if he's gotten 4 hours of sleep during the day, it's a little more manageable.

Supposedly it's the opposite -- daytime sleep helps nighttime sleep. But then again, since starting daycare he barely naps but has totally STTN a few times so... who knows?

@2PeasinaPod: it definitely make sense, but it's hard for us to either squeeze in a 3rd nap on a day when he has two long morning naps, OR go without a 3rd nap, because then he's up too long before bed...

For instance, today he napped from 8-10:20am. Awake til 12:30, and is still sleeping...if he sleeps til 2:30, then he'll be ready for a nap again around 4:30, but we start bedtime routine at 6! So I feel like i would'nt want to put him down for a nap anytime after 4...I'm not sure how to manage that.

Hmm I must be one of the only ones who limit naps! DD is 3.5 months and has been STTN since 2.5 months, she usually has 3-4 naps a day but if she naps for longer than 2 hours, I wake her up. She has no strict nap schedule but we put her in bed at 9 and she sleeps until we wake her up around 6:30am (more like 8 on the weekends). So far it's been working well for us, she's a super happy baby.

I think every kid is different! We've had the opposite problem until recently. He wouldn't want to nap much during the day (took catnaps) and slept really well at night.

I think it's about his awake time more than how long he's napping. At our babies' age, anywhere between 2-3 hours of awake time is about all they'll be able to handle. So we'll put LO down anywhere between there for a nap. Depending on how long he sleeps determines if he gets 2 or 3 naps that day.

For instance, he's at my BFF's today, so he was up an hour earlier than usual. He slept 2 hours in the morning and will likely sleep 2 hours in the afternoon. He won't take a 3rd nap if he does that. But for days that my dad watches him, he gets up an hour later, only takes a half hour nap in the morning and maybe an hour and a half in the afternoon. He then needs a quick half hour cat nap before 6pm dinner. And if we want him to go to sleep easily for us at 8/8:30, he has to be up for at least 2 hours before bedtime.

Does that make sense?

@kodybear: hm interesting! Maybe I'll experiment the rest of the week and see how it goes at night. @NovBaby1112: yeah I think he is just a sleepier baby than most, because even now at almost 7 months he still needs a nap after just 2 hours of awake time.

i used to be scared of this too! LO is almost 6 months and she sleeps alot for her age. Right now she's sleeping 11ish hours at night and takes about 3 naps, 2 of which are 2hrs+. I used to limit her naps to about 2 hours max and wouldn't let her sleep after 5pm (she goes down to sleep at 730pm). but the last month or two she's been super fussy from 5-7 so i experimented letting her sleep as long as she wanted to for naps with the only limit being waking her up at about 615pm at the latest. and so far, her night sleep has been exactly the same! and her fussy period just gets pushed back about 30 min so we're sticking with this for awhile!

@hilsy85: yea, that would just make for an overtired baby if he only napped 1 hr the rest of the day! He might just have higher than average sleep needs, so I say let him guide you. The only time I wake LO is if she takes a long nap in the evening too close to her bedtime. I find the cat nap before bed works better than a long nap, but I don't see a problem with having the 2 long naps in the morning and afternoon.

@MsLipGloss: I was just going to write that same thing!

I haven't dealt with this problem yet but kind of have with the reverse. If LO doesn't nap during the day (or takes crap naps) her sleeps is hell at night. If she takes her 2-3 naps during the day (though, only 40-80 minutes) she usually will give me the long stretches at night.

My LO usually takes one 2 hour nap but she will sleep longer on some days...4 or 5 hours and it never affects her sleep at night,

@NovBaby1112: I have seen that chart! That's what made me thing that I SHOULD be limiting...he sleeps about 11.5-12 hours at night, including about 15 min for 1 night nursing session, so it says his naps should be capped at 3.25 hours total..he already napped for 2 hours 20 min this morning which leaves him with 1 hour left for the rest of the day (it's only 1pm here...) not gonna happen!
