Aside from waiting to actually see him,. mine have been really quick too. Sometimes I wait 30+ minutes for him and then he's in and out in less than 5 minutes. The nurse is the one checking the doppler and my vitals and I actually like her more than our OB. That being said, he is always open to answering any questions we have and I know that I will have even more now that we are getting closer to our due date.

Although the appointments are not long, I haven't felt rushed by either the midwife or OB. I've seen two midwives and they were both great and answered any questions, asked a lot of questions, told me what I can expect, etc. I only saw the OB once and I think she was even more thorough than the midwives! I have had spotting throughout the pregnancy though, so perhaps because it's a little more unusual they spend a little extra time to make sure things are ok.

I'm in my 3rd trimester and all of my appointments are quick as well. DH has stopped going because they are usually only 15 minutes and there's no point in him taking off from work.

All depends on my questions. If I don't have any, it's pee in the cup, weight, BP, doppler and any instructions from the dr. At first it seemed weird but now I'm glad. I like to get in, hear that hb and get out of there! Especially if I have my toddler with me... I only have so long before he finishes those crackers and starts wreaking havoc.

I think I just anticipated them and had them built up in my head so much, that they always seem to go by too quick and feel mildly disappointing. But, like others have said, it's just regular day-to-day stuff for these doctor's offices and they will never be as excited or perky as we are.

I think most doctors are like that. I have rarely ever met a doctor who really cared to answer my questions in depth so I guess I'm just used to it. It doesn't mean that it's right but great doctors are rare.

That kind of experience isn't horribly uncommon. One of the reasons I love working with my midwives is that they always give me at least an hour to talk with them and go over any changes/concerns.

I'd get into the habit of making a list of questions for your doctor, as you think of them, and pursuing explanations from them with follow-up questions ("Why is this OK? What does that involve?" etc.). And do your own research! It's possible to get some great information from books and the web.

I have a midwife and had an OB for my first, and it's honestly the same thing. It was really annoying to me with my first because I had a 2.5 hour round trip drive to get to the doctor's, I'd spend 20 minutes in the waiting room, then pee in a cup, listen to the heartbeat, and be out in five minutes.

But, really, unless anything is wrong, a doctor's appointment should be short. I think before my first pregnancy, I thought there would be a lot more pants off and conversation, but I guess it's not really necessary as long as everything looks good.

My husband and I always joke when we watch "I Didn't Know I Was Pregnant" and they act like it's AMAZING that the baby survived with no prenatal care: "Oh my God! How did the baby survive when her mother didn't pee in a cup and get her blood pressure tested once a month???"

I think most doctors are like that. They want you in and out and onto the next. You can always call and ask about the things you forgot about during the apt.

This is why dh likes to come to all my apts. He knows I get flustered when they g so fast so I forget to ask things.

I have a very social doctor, she always wants to sit and chit chat with us about everything and I love that. However we know her personally as well so I think that makes a little difference. She is truely interested in names we have picked out and how we are decorating the nursery and so forth! Makes me 100x more comfortable!

I have found that it depends which doctor in the practice I'm seeing. my normal OB-GYN is in the practice, so when I see her, it's pretty quick - she's been seeing me for about 8 years now, so she's familiar with me.

I met with a male doctor in the practice for an appt (they encourage you to meet them all because any could deliver you), and as we hadn't met before, it felt longer. He was very friendly with DH (it was anatomy scan day) and explained her measurements, pointed out how to tell what was what on the scan, etc.

For the most part, I was told the same as PP - that second tri is relatively 'uneventful' as long as things are going well!

I felt the same way! I think OB's are matter of fact, nothing is wrong, bing-bang-boom, you're out whereas a midwife might be more thorough. At least that's what I've heard. I have a male OB also and I'm always curious if it would be different if I actually had a doctor who has experienced pregnancy for themself. I learned to write all my questions down beforehand.

@MamaMoose: ya i realize that must be part of it.

i guess i need to lower my expectations on how long the appts should be. i think its also the not knowing what is going on and then it happens so fast. before he even sat down, he told us the results, then handed me a paper saying i had to go for my second blood test (which i didn't know i would have to do today). then head into exam room and he says to lie down but i didn't know why. finally caught on we were doing the sonogram (it was the first time hearing it in his office). then its over, lol.

@PurpleUnicorn: I think part of the disconnect comes from the fact that for us everything is new and interesting but for our doctors all of these things are really routine so they can kind of go on auto pilot.

@JessLC: me too, i use the notes on my Iphone to write my questions throughout the month as i think of them.

And i think the reason i feel my doctor is "nice" is because he is very patient with my questions, he answers them, but just really fast lol. "is it ok to do electrolysis?" "yup". next. i guess i don't know what i am expecting more than that, maybe just more explanations of WHY for some things i guess. But i think i will just have to ask more questions to get more info.

my last appt was about 5 minutes. doppler, any questions (which i don't have because i'm on google obsessively), and that's it. my husband came too, thinking we'd have an ultrasound, but alas no. i think he was disappointed. i was too!

i find that if i am put on the spot to ask questions, i forget all of them, so i try to write them down and any possible follow-up questions that i have related to the original question.

I had my second prenatal appt today and i had my list of questions and we heard the heartbeat and my doctor told us the results were good from the first trimester ultrasound and blood work....but all that took like, 10 minutes? We were in and out and I guess I felt like i needed more info but didn't get it, lol. Although i am not sure what info i still needed.... Maybe it was him saying "results are good!" so quickly i didn't realize what he was talking about first.

After i left, i realized i wanted more details since i didn't remember exactly everything we tested for. Like what do i no longer need to worry about?

Even discussing my high blood pressure, i told him how it got super high on the weekend, so he checked it and said we will increase my meds. the end. what do i do if next week it's still high? he said it will be a sign we need to make another adjustment, end of story. bye bye.

Maybe he is just really abrupt and quick and i want to know everything and hear it three times! Anyone else ever feel like this? He is nice about everything, abrupt does not imply he is mean or cold or anything.
