I tend to over-research with product decisions, but can't use the EWG recommendations very much. I honestly don't have enough money, hah.

Like someone else said, using sunscreen is much more important than what type of sunscreen. Also, in 10-15 years, the new "safe" ingredients and materials might not be that safe anymore. So I take it with a large dose of salt.

I use spray sunscreen liberally bc it's the only kind I can bring myself to use. I go outside to spray and hold my breath, pausing between each limb/area to take a breath.

Not really, though I have peeked in a few times. I'm not a scientist, but well-versed with researching. I think some of their info is alarmist.

@junebugsmama: I'm with you on the "fewer products in general".

Who is to say that in 10-15 years, "they" aren't going to discover/decide that some of the greener alternatives people are very gung-ho about now are even worse for us? I'll take a look at this sort of site, but don't necessarily follow the guidelines. Like @autumnlove: I applied one of the "safe" sunscreens to my kids, one who has sensitive skin, one who doesn't, and they both ended up reacting with bright red skin. We've never had that issue with mainstream brands like Coppertone or Banana Boat.

@junebugsmama: I agree. There is something off about the site. I understand that there is research and chemists and scientist that contribute to the site but yeah, maybe it is like @ShootingStar: said... it's the alarming tone.

I admit when I first went on the site I thought it was a part of the FDA or something (think it was the .org and how the site is presented... though (duh!) if it was a government site, it would be .gov). It wasn't until I bumped that thread yesterday that I read the 'About' section where I realized what the website was.

@bluestriped bee: I am very torn. something about the whole website sets off my skeptic alarm, especially as someone with a healthy respect for science. I think chemical phobia is out of hand and the word natural has kind of lost its meaning! Or even worse... "Green". At the same time... I also like the idea of using products with simpler ingredients or just less ingredients in general. Or even better less products in general!

I found a natural sunscreen I like for my daily face moisturizer, and I've tried some of the mineral based ones for my son, but I would also use a chemical one. I cloth diapered for environmental reasons but we are now on disposables... And I tried mainstream to "natural" diapers. So I don't buy in completely but Ill try some of the options. It's so hard to be an educated consumer because all info seems biased and one sided.

No, I think they're kind of alarmist. I also think websites like this make people feel bad for using products like Coppertone on their kids, when the most important thing is that they use sunscreen (at least IMO).

Generally I do for us all as far as skincare products. I'm not good about it for cleaning products. For sunscreen I do use one for the one I rub on her every day before daycare but I do do find the sprays useful for me (quick) and for LO (mostly for her head as rubbing sunscreen into your part or scalp isn't really feasible and she won't wear a hat usually. I'd rather use unsafe sprays than have her scalp burnt AF. I do like free and clear laundry detergents and will go back eventually but I cloth diaper and needs strong detergent like tide.

@petunia354: Hahahaha this is so me. I have a redheaded baby so I just go for whatever is the highest SPF and apply every hour, plus make her take a shade and water break in between applications.

Sometimes but I take it with a grain of salt.

@autumnlove: I like Alba so much better than Thinkbaby. No rash from either but alba rubs in so much easier.

I tried but I never loved any of the safe sunscreens. They were hard to apply and a popular one (Thinkbaby) gave LO 1 a horrible rash. I am still looking for the perfect and "safe" sunscreen but we will use Alba in the meantime.

I need to use safer products around the house!

We do for some things but we haven't switched yet for dishwashing detergent and I'm still on the hunt for a great laundry detergent but I can't say I've checked on there recently about that one. I think just about everything else has been switched out in our house with the exception of toilet bowl cleaner and I keep a tub of Clorox wipes on hand for stuff like wiping down the little potty or after the dog throws up.

I follow them for some items mostly for LO. I don't even really think about it for myself. But I'm trying to change that and want to be a bit more strict with everything in our household, what we wash clothes and dishes with, what we put on our skin, etc. DH has eczema and it's been getting worse. I also have been having some health issues and watched a doc about endometriosis where a lot of the doctors interviewed were talking about how so many illnesses/diseases have much higher diagnoses than they did in the past and they believe it's due to chemicals, the ones we ingest through our food and the ones we take in through our skin.

So, long story short, I'm about to be a frequent flyer on that site.

I actually looked for the first time for sunscreen. Never been to the website before but I have heard about EWG on the boards and blog here on HB.

At the moment, I do listen to their recommendations, but I'm sure in a few months from now I might not. I try to be conscientious of health and environment issues. I am a mom who cloth diaperer and I live in Seattle so I compost and such. I am, also, a scientist so I usually rely on published literature and do my research... but I'm, also, a laid back mom (at least, I think I am) that goes with whatever works. I know sometimes what is recommended (even if backed by research) is not always practical (especially as a twin mom).

http://www.ewg.org/

ETA:
Oh, I only follow it for my kids.
Never even thought it about looking for myself.
