Absolutely, I feel very strongly about doing everything I can to protect my boys.

It was mandatory at my last job where we worked in a lab with influenza and since then I have continued to get vaccinated. Knowing the science behind it has made me much more emphatic about getting it.

Yes. I got the flu twice in 2 years. The first time I was coughing blood and ended up being given a drug that is considered a step up from tamiflu. I have never remembered being anywhere near that sick. I had 7 days off work. I spent a short amount of time in hospital as well, then spent the next few days sleeping on my floor futon. It was horrendous.

The next year (I was living in Japan for both of these years and I don't think flu shots were ever offered to us. Regardless, I should have been more proactive). I had flu with bronchitis and was absolutely miserable. On top of that, I had to be fully quarantined and ended up missing 8 days of work, because I had strain A and strain B was the common one that year - The doctor basically said to me that if I caught B on top of it off someone at the grocery store or on a train etc, I would more than likely end up in ICU. Flu isn't something to play around with.

As a result, I cannot think of not getting the flu shot, especially with a little one on the way. And I agree with previous posters. One of the biggest problems is that people mistake seasonal colds for the flu, and therefore think that their shot somehow caused it. This is not the case.

ETA: After some students got Swine Flu a few years ago in the city's school system, the board of education would give us unlimited sick days, especially for flu, with a doctor's note. Nobody ever questioned this - Flu in a place as dense as Japan is taken very, very seriously, and schools are the best place for spreading.

Yes, I do, every year since my mom got the Swine Flu a few years back. She was sick for 2-3 weeks and not 100% for *2 months.* I can't imagine passing that on to my child.

Yep, I think I've gotten one every year since the whole Swine Flu scare. I usually do my annual physical in October and the doctor offers it to me at that point.

I had the real flu once, and even though it was (whoa, I'm old) like 16 years ago now, I never ever ever want to relive it.

Also have to agree with others who say that a bad cold =/= THE FLU. Yes, technically it's possible to get the flu even if you got the shot, but only if it's an uncommon strain or you were incubating it before you got the vaccine.

ETA: I have also heard some people (not in this thread, IRL) say that got the flu shot and still got the stomach flu and that. drives. me. NUTS. A stomach bug is not the flu, the real flu doesn't cause vomiting unless it's due to pain or high fever, and there's no vaccine against a stomach bug!!

No I haven't. I'll be pregnant during flu season this year so I might. I just don't have a fear or any illnesses & actually am a little too lax when it comes to stuff like that. I'm not against vaccinations or anything, I make sure LO gets all hers on time. I just don't feel concern when it comes to illnesses very often & I really need to work on being more proactive about those things.

Yes! Every year. DH never did... until he got the flu FOR REAL shortly after we were married. Now, he gets it every year.

Although there are strains of flu that the shot doesn't cover, so it's possible to get the flu even when you get the shot, I am not sure that people who say "I get the shot and I still get the flu" really got the real flu. The flu is NOT low fever, some aches and chills, cold symptoms, miss 2 or 3 days of work and take Motrin. The flu is in bed for a week with a very high fever, incapacitated, even for very healthy individuals.

My DH is the healthiest person I know and he was literally in bed for 7 days straight with fevers of almost 104, unable to drink anything, delirious from fever. It was so, so scary. We had to take him to the ER and they found out he had developed pneumonia as a complication of the flu. So it can happen to anyone!

We're passionate about spreading the Flu Shot Gospel in my house.

@alohaorchid: It takes at least two weeks for the vaccine to work effectively which is why it's recommended that you get the shot as early as possible. Most likely the flu was already in your system before the shot :( and so the shot itself didn't cause it.

I always get it and as someone who had a January baby, I really appreciated people who got it to protect my LO when he couldn't have it himself.

Unless you are literally down for the count wanting to die for a week you got some other kind of virus." (he's a nurse)
