I would hate if his family excluded me lol. And my family adores my DH, so we always go together unless he is working and then I only visit for a little while. But my family is super good at making him feel welcome and just another son. His family can't quite figure that one out :)

We usually go together, but every once in awhile it won't work out. For example, tomorrow I'm going to my mom & dad's and going swimming with my 22 month old niece and my sister....he's staying home to do some work around the house. In the evening, we're having friends over for a BBQ and to go see fireworks together. My family loves my husband, so I think they're a little bummed that he's not coming with.

I'm more likely to pass on get togethers with his family than he is with mine. I have a hard time dealing with my MIL.

I have "alone time" with my mom a lot because we go shopping together. I also stop by my parents' house sometimes on the way home from work. Other than that we're always together when we see our families. I think DH has gone down to his parents' house once or twice without me to help his dad with some home improvement project.

My husband gets a lot of alone time with his family on the weekends when I am working at weddings. So usually every Saturday when I am working, he'll go spend the day with them. They only live 10 minutes away.

We only see my family maybe once a month (they live 30 mins away), and so sometimes we'll go see them together and other times I'll go see them on my own.

Unless he's not feeling well or has something already planned, he's there. I've had situations where we're supposed to have dinner with his family and I get a migraine so I say go without me, but they all say no we'll postpone the dinner so I can make it. I think it's very sweet of them.

We typically both go. The only time we do things separately is if Hubs goes home for a family event and I'm on-call for work. Otherwise, we both go. And we usually end up seeing both families (they live 10 minutes from each other). It makes it hard, though, because like @mamamoose said, we sometimes feel like we're getting pulled in a thousand directions. If we come to town and don't see someone and they find out about it, we get grief for it.

@eeh: We're the same way.
Both sets of parents live in the same neighborhood so if DH goes to visit, I come along then we go see my parents. His sister lives in our building, and mine comes over weekly so we don't usually need/want alone family (old) time.

My family LOVES LOVES LOVES the hubby. Maybe almost more than me since it seems they call him more or before they call me! Therefore, the hubby attends all family events. My family constantly reminds me how much they miss him if he's not there.

I get alone time with my family all the time! Hubs usually only comes with me to visit them for the main holidays or birthdays (and sometimes not even birthdays). So I get to spend a lot of time with my family without Hubs.

Hubs on the other hand NEVER had alone time with his family. He won't visit them if I don't come along, haha.

It depends, usually DH comes with me to visit my family but on occasion he hasn't; really just depends upon what he has going on at the time. It is rare that he goes to visit his family without me however whenever we are at his dad's house I try to stay upstairs in the morning or go upstairs earlier in the evening to give him and his dad some alone time.

We sometimes get alone time but usually we visit family together. Actually they come over to our place usually so we're always both there. I never even thought to give him "alone" time with his mom. He just always includes me. He does take her out to eat dinner (just the two of them) on her birthday but that's so that they can enjoy dinner without having a toddler to tend to. I'll stay home and watch my son while they have their one-on-one dinner.

Usually we both go to family events. But since DH has been in school, I have had to go to things by myself while he studies. I do go lunch or shopping with just my sister or Mom for some girl time.

I've never even considered the idea of alone time with my family...I guess when either of us thinks about our families it always includes the other person so we wouldn't want alone time. We each end up with alone time though because we live 10 minutes away from each set of parents and I'll go have dinner with my parents if my husband's working and he'll go stop by his parents if I'm doing something, etc. We don't intentionally plan for alone time, it just happens.

I visit my family alone a lot, for money reasons! It's a short flight, but can still be pricey. If DH goes with me, he's included in everything because my parents love him and where else would he go in a city he doesn't know? Haha. When my family visits us, I'll get alone time with my mom because we'll go shopping, but otherwise everyone is together!

We try to squeeze in alone time. Our families are both in Mass and we are in TN. Usually once a year we will each take a solo trip to Mass to just be with our own family. Honestly the main reason for it is when I go home alone I can just spend a whole weekend with my family. And he can do the same. When we go home together we are being constantly pulled in two directions and we feel like we're always letting someone down. Also when our families come to visit us they will usually do a long weekend and the person whose family it is will take a day off to be with them while the other one works that day.

Whenever I visit Bee's family, I always try to (discreetly) give her some alone time with her brother and their parents. But they are so inclusive that they don't ever take me up on it! They have really welcomed me into their family. Well except for the part where I can't really understand what anyone is saying, because everyone is speaking Korean. But it's Bee's only time to really speak Korean, so I don't mind.

Anyway the whole thing gets me thinking about one's "old family" versus their "new family." Do you get "alone time" with your (old) family? Or does your SO attend all of your (old) family events?
