They take it a bit better from me, but hate that DH tells them what (not) to do with our kids, so visits tend to be strained. They want a lot more freedom with the kids, but until they can demonstrate they will follow the rules we set out, they won't get it. They just moved to our town and we have dinner with them probably every other week. Its nice to have them close and they adore their grand kids. hubs works at the same place as my FIL so they see each other more. I wouldnt say we go out of our way to hang out with them and I definitely dont have any where near the relationship I have with my family. They dont really "do" anything so we tend to make plans with my family more. I have two sets of in-laws. FIL and SMIL are generally great, although after 2 weeks of them staying with us this summer (plus their 2 adult sons plus their girlfriends) I started to hate them all - I think that was just too many people in my space for too long, plus my SMIL, who is the world's loveliest woman, is SUPER mother-y and does things like ask me if I have to go to the bathroom before we go out anywhere, which makes me crazy because I'm 36 years old and I have to pee I will just do that on my own volition. But generally I love them. Unfortunately, they live in England and we only see them once or twice a year. MIL and SFIL are nightmares and we have virtually no relationship with them except when they call to ask for money. Luckily, they also live in a different country so they're not part of our lives at all - I've literally only met them once (and it wasn't at our wedding, because they didn't attend). He gets along great with my younger cousins also. My in-laws are pretty laid back so I do! We just can't work together though or we butt heads. I wouldn't say I'm "friends" with my MIL that I call her to hang out, but we have a great relationship and she's an amazing grandma to my girls. I find myself getting irritated with comments about parenting style and the like, but they seriously love my kids and will (and have) dropped everything to help us out. We lived 3.5 hours away from them when I was pregnant with my son and they drove down twice when I thought I was in labor and wasn't. And I heard NO complaints from them. When we moved in June from FL to VA, they made the trip with us and stayed and helped us unpack and get settled. So I tend to get over their comments and general spoiling of my kids. DH is close to his dad. But now that we have a kid, it's going to cause issues. FIL is very old-school authoritarian, and we're just not. At all. He's already told DH at *least* five times not to hold her too much because we'd spoil her (and he started this when she was still in the nicu). DH is hiding the fact that we cosleep from him. Once she's old enough for him to realize we not only won't stank (ETA- stank? Really phone? Spank!), but actually won't use traditional punishment at all, it's going to be a fight. Not to mention how he'll respond to extended BFing (assuming we successfully manage BFing at all). MIL is a chain smoking, pill popping alcoholic. She started stealing from DH when he was a teen and still asks us for money. She also has always blatantly preferred his sister and youngest brother, and only started wanting to see us, or even answer DH's calls, once LO was born.
