I get angry when parents send obviously sick children. First, I feel bad for that poor kid. Then I get really pissed that the parents aren't thinking of all the other kids in the room. Baby A got her first bout of pink eye after the teachers told the sick kid's parents that it looked like pink eye. Parents said it's just allergies and kept bringing the kid until the teacher insisted they take the kid to the doc. Oh, hey, look at that - it's pink eye! I really understand that it's hard to find back up childcare when your kid is sick, but it's something that has to be done.

@jedeve: It totally bothered me when LO went to daycare. I would get so annoyed because these children were obviously very ill, and their parents would send them into school anyway, only to get the rest of the class sick. Not to mention, having a sick kid that wont sleep at night sucks the life out of me. So, I totally get where you are coming from.

Coughing and general sickness is par for course at DCP - I'm use to it. We do have a good sick policy though - kids must be fever free for 24 hours - if you have a fever you have to pick up your kid within 1 hour.

Pink eye? If there is crusty/oozing you have to stay home - if its just pink and your on meds you can come to school.

Loose stools? Gotta go home!

@jedeve: I was turned away at the door because I told my daycare provider that LO had thrown up over night. Even though we were both like 95% sure it was because she was teething and shoved her hand in her mouth and gagged...And, my daycare worker is my friend and felt terrible, but I understood why she had to follow the rules.

Ours enforces them. If they even suspect an illness, it's up to the parent to take them to the doctor to get cleared.

Happened when my son had a reaction to antibitoics from an ear infection. They thought it was Fifths and sent him home.

generally it doesn't bother me, although in the situation you describe, i would be annoyed with the parents. i'm guessing they had little choice but to bring him back in even though they seemed to know he was sick, but man, what a pain for everyone else to catch croup! i'm sorry your little one isn't feeling well!

@jedeve: it does kind of bother me when she gets sick from other kids at preschool. Lots of kids have been to school with known contagious illnesses. Why not keep them home?

The three of us were sick from September-end of November. We each had to take 2+ courses of antibiotics!

Seriously, don't send your kid to school the morning after they've been diagnosed with croup. (But then I think about the incubation period, too, and am like wellllll we've already been exposed!)

Nope, doesn't annoy me. It's part of having your child around other children. I think if it bothers you, it might be better for you to get a nanny.

@winniebee: I try to assume the parents have no other options for child care and have to bring their kid in or they will get fired!

But then again it's REALLY not fair if parents who have flexibility are dropping off sick kids and getting the kids whose parents can't take time off sick.

@bpcmarj: @Adira: I think I get annoyed because they let parents drop their kids off while saying, "he has croup!" Or "she has pinkeye!" But then again it's not like he wouldn't have been exposed in the incubation period anyway. And I know he needs to build his immune system. It doesn't but me when it's a cold but anything bigger does.

DH is worried about sending LO2 there next year since s/he won't be old enough for a flu shit until midwinter.

It's not like I want to keep him in a bubble, but I think my guilty mom side comes out and says "if you didn't work he woukdnt be sick" or "if you stayed at home he wouldn't be sick."

Ugh I'm seriously ready for winter to be OVER. we had a blizzard last night though so I'm not getting my hopes up!

When I was working and T was in daycare he literally had a few healthy weeks from Oct-July. It was not annoying, but a little heartbreaking and hard on us as first time parents. He goes to a daycare a few days a week now and does get sick but it doesn't seem nearly as bad as last year.

It does annoy me when parents being sick kids to daycare. I know it's hard to take time off work but it screws everyone else.

No, I don't get annoyed. I figure it's just par for the course. It always sucks (especially because I catch everything he brings home, but I know often kids don't even show symptoms when they are originally contagious, and most parents probably can't stay home just because their kid might be sick (or even is sick), so they have to send them to daycare!

Sorry your LO has croup though - that's rough!

Does it annoy me; yes. But, I don't think that there is anything more that my daycare can do. She is very good about following the state rules (24hrs after a fever is gone or after vomiting). But, things happen and people get sick. We have gotten sick more than once this winter (read; constantly) and I think at least once we have been the starters of the sickness that passed onto others :( To me, sickness is just another part of winter. It sucks, but we push through and look forward to spring...and allergies! ;)

LO has croup. It was a pretty sad rough night. He picked it up from daycare. There was a kid who had croup and rsv that they sent home sick on Wednesday. He was dropped off again on Thursday too and they sent him home again after he got sick. On Friday they had signs up everywhere warning about croup and rsv.

This isn't the first time something like this has happened. They just aren't that good about sending sick kids home or enforcing that the parents not drop them off. Which annoys me.

On the other hand, I know it's daycare and I know he is going to get sick. And I know not all parents have paid sick days. It's just sad seeing him so sick.
