I definitely second @jessiejo17 - lysine helps so much!

I rarely get canker sores but my husband would have at least one in his mouth around 80% of the time - I felt so bad for him! Then his aunt mentioned that Lysine pills really helped and now he rarely gets them. He doesn't even really take the pills much at all, just once every couple of months when he feels like he's about to get one!

Occasionally I will get one, but I used to get them all the time when I was younger. Gargle saltwater and take L-Lysine helps!

My husband gets them a bunch, usually when he is stressed. He has had this issue for most of his life. He got a prescription from the dr to relieve them, and it is working well!

My brother and I get them on what seems like a monthly basis ever since we were little. We still get them! It's so frustrating and painful. We've got them on our tongues, on the soft palate under the tongue, on our cheeks, on the inside of our lips, even on the dangly thing in the back of your throat!!

I've asked the doctor what causes it and she said it's just a hereditary thing and unfortunately, nothing can really be done. Recently, I've started only getting them when AF comes to visit so at least I'm prepared to endure the unbearable pain the next week and a half.

@MamaMoose: I'll have to look into that!! Immediate relief - amazing! Thanks for sharing!!!

I used to get them fairly often - my mom gets them too...

I found drinking milk definitely helps the pain. I haven't gotten many in the last 10 years - maybe 2 or 3 - not sure why.

I went gluten free due to celiac and that stopped a lot of things.

Actually, just read BoiledPNuts link and the fact that I now have an autoimmune disease under control makes a lot of sense why I don't get them anymore.

I used to get them a lot when I was in high school. I don't get them as much today though. I've noticed I get them now when I have some kind of mouth trauma (bite my lip, brushing too hard) or really acidic food (too much citrus). My dentist gave me viscous lidocaine when I was younger, but now I just use whatever.

BTW, canker sores are NOT caused by the Herpes virus. There is absolutely no evidence of that. Cold sores are caused by it. The two are totally different.

Yes I get them on my tongue. Ever since I was little. My whole family has always had problems with them, and always on the tongue. Wagon Sr. never had problems til we got together, now he gets them on his tongue.

It's Herpes :( Virus that spreads very easily by kissing or sharing food or drink. Sadness. We're lucky that the kind we get is just on the tongue and not on the lips, but they still stink. Definitely stress related. I always get one when I've stayed up too late one night.

I get them really badly when I'm stressed and so does my brother. Magic fix we just found out about from my bro's nurse MIL: tea tree oil! Just put a dab on with a q-tip right before bed and it will be cured when you wake up. It tastes a little yucky but totally worth it!

My brother and I used to get a lot of canker sores when we were little. So did my mom. Apparently they don't know what causes them, although stress can be a factor. Charlie had sores one time that were really bad.
