Swear word = teachable moment, but slurs are on a totally different level. I swear too much to be mad if others do, plus I see them as only strong words and those that can be classified as "just for grown-ups."<br /> I already ask people I don't know to knock it off if they are throwing slurs around in front of me or being blatantly racist, homophobic, etc, so I can imagine I'll be even more bold when LO is around. I kind of feel like I can't get get too mad at other people b/c I still slip up way too often, and so does DH. We have been getting much better about watching our language around our daughter, but we're far from perfect. The crazy thing though, is that the people who have used the worst language around DD by far are parents of other kids her age. I experienced something similar yesterday - we were watching the baseball game with my ILs and when my MIL commented about not liking a player, FIL was like, "Oh yeah, you just don't like that guy because he's black." She laughed and said no and he said he was just kidding, but I was still pissed. Luckily for them DH wasn't in the room because he and I have talked about this many times, and he knows that if his parents are being racist assholes he needs to tell them that we won't tolerate that kind of ugly offensive language around LO.</p> <p>Ironically enough, my MIL was all over her brother's case yesterday for saying the word shit in front of their other grandson. But yeah, it's fine to joke about not liking people because they're black. And she's said worse, more blatantly racist or homophobic, things in the past.
