I compliment everyone constantly, though I think the trick is to focus on something you think they would like to hear. For instance, if you're in the grocery store line and the clerk has a really wild manicure, compliment them on it (that doesn't mean you have to be fake and say you love it if you really don't). I need to get better about that! My mom used to be a manicurist and she said that she gave everyone that came in some kind of compliment/found something nice to say about them. She said that it helped them relax and always put them in a great mood.
