I find that "there's really not anything we need", "your presence is present enough" etc. all tend to be euphemisms for preferring cash. But in your specific example, it really could just be that the couple is realizing it's expensive to attend a destination wedding, and really doesn't want you to spend further. I have not had anyone specifically request no gifts. I would bring a card and that's it.
