I always give fruit as part of the meal so I don't treat it like a dessert. So DD doesn't get dessert but I'll treat her to things like ice cream once in a while. I usually do that as part of our mommy-daughter dates!

ETA - It's actually just frozen yogurt, but I tell her it is ice cream! LOL.

@jmarionsmith: hmm good point! That's interesting that your LO will refuse veggies in favor of fruit, LO hasn't started doing that yet.

i save the fruit part of his meal until last only because he will refuse the veggie if i'm giving him fruits at the same time. he literally will pick his veggies and sometimes the main dish up off the tray and throw it on the floor.

if anything i think it is teaching them that fruit IS dessert and i don't see anything wrong with that. when they're older hopefully their go to "sweets" will be fruit.

My family never had dessert (or something sweet after dinner) and it never bothered me. Every once in a while we would have a treat later in the night if we were watching a movie or doing another family activity.

Husband's family always had/has a "dessert" immediately following dinner. It is often fruit. Occasionally it is ice cream, cake, or cookies.

@lamariniere: I definitely generally agree with "everything in moderation", plus DH and I definitely enjoy chocolate/ice cream/cookies, and it's unrealistic to think we'll give them up, and unfair to think that we can eat them in front of LO without sharing all the time!

@hilsy85: oohhh. LO has never gotten sweets. Besides fruits. ;) I don't plan to start any time soon.

And I wouldn't be too heartbroken if my 5 year old comes up to me asking for a apple post dinner as opposed to ice cream!

@hilsy85: I understand completely. I am too careful about sweet endings to meals, because you do come to expect it. I got into a dessert habit a few years ago and it's a really hard habit to break.

@hilsy85: I don't think you are creating bad habits. Even if it turns into a cookie or something "less" healthy, if you teach moderation, it can be a good and pleasurable part of the meal. When LO was very young dessert was plain yogurt. Now it is either yogurt or fruit. We rarely have "real" dessert. But for example tonight we had strawberries and then some chocolate that we recently received as a gift. He had his one piece and that was it.

@regberadaisy: Hmm not to me! Fruit is still sugary so I try to avoid feeding her a lot of it after dinner...she gets plenty of it earlier in the day. My GD diet made me really aware of sugar in fruit. I also need to start eating this way again...my mid section is getting soft since having my baby.

Fruit is usually served as part of the meal in our home. As far as dessert goes, not often will C be given dessert but every once in awhile he'll ask for a cookie or cracker so he'll get one if he asks and if he ate decently at dinner. If he didn't eat much dinner but still asks, he doesn't get one as I'd rather him get his calories from better choices.

@regberadaisy: @looch: I guess I really mean something sweet at the end of a meal, not so much fruit vs "real" dessert...like I said, I can see it becoming more "Real" dessert when he's older. I just worry that I'm setting him up to expect sweets, and that as he gets older, fruit won't cut it. He also eats a ton of fruit (gets some with every meal) and that's another semi-concern (but not really)(I posted about whether it's possible to eat too much fruit!).

Fruit isn't dessert to me, it's part of the meal. I classify desserts as things like chocolate cake, cheesecake, pie, cookies, ice cream, etc.

My LO eats fruit throughout the day, and we give him a small serving after dinner occasionally. On special days we might give him a little ice cream or sorbet, but we don't make it an everyday thing.

@autumnlove: I think fruits and "desserts" are different! ;)

It's a good way to get her daily serving of fruits in. :)

@hilsy85: Fruits are good for them! LO often gets it after dinner and as snacks throughout the day.
ETA: today's afternoon snack we sent to daycare was homemade applesauce and grapes. She also got oranges with her lunch!

I realized that I tend to give LO some dessert (aka fresh fruit) at the end of lunch and dinner...does anyone else do something similar? I can see it turning into a cookie or a popsicle as he gets older. Do you think giving something sweet at the end of meals creates a bad habit/dependency on having sweets all the time?

I think I started doing this because Dh ALWAYS has dessert...I never really had it regularly before we started dating, but now i find that I always have a piece of chocolate, some fruit, or if I'm being bad some ice cream at the end of the night!
