My father just died of chronic renal failure, so kidney issues are something I really think about. One of his nephrologists once told me that he's seen an increase in the kind of kidney damage that ibuprofen can cause in recent years, and that he thought that long term usage even at suggest dosages wasn't healthy.

It can also interfere with prostaglandins, and potentially effect conception. For all these reasons, I try not to take it, and I try not to give it to my daughter. Not always successful, but I keep this all in mind.

Usually ibuprofen but sometimes we switch between the two if the fever is really bad.

Nothing yet, but our ped recommended baby Tylenol so that's what we have in the medicine closet.

Our pediatrician prefers Ibuprofen, so that is what we use. It worked great for a weekend of high fevers that we recently went through.

I prefer it because I read an article about a year ago that heavy use of Acetaminophen can be linked with asthma. Not that we use any of them all that often, and I really never looked into the validity of the study but my husband has asthma, so we want to avoid it at all costs.

We prefer ibuprofen since it doesn't pass thru the liver. But since LMW is too young for it (they say not to use it before 6 months) we give her acetaminophen. It still takes almost an hour to kick in for her :(

We usually do the same, acetaminophen during the day and then ibuprofen at night. But our pediatrician mentioned at our last visit that we can alternate them throughout the day. I tried that the last time DD had a fever and it didn't seem to work any better, though.

I use both. Usually I give IB profen before bed time because it lasts longer. I prefer it over acetaminophen and my pedi didn't tell us to use one over the other. My preference is probably just personal bias though since i dont take tylenol often myself.

DS had a febrile seizure about 6 weeks ago or so when his fever spiked high and fast. Now I keep both on hand all of the time.

We use ibuprofen because all the times we have used it has been for teething. We have both in the house though.

Acetaminophen! We've only given my DS ibuprofen once when he went through a really bad teething phase. Our ped recommended acetaminophen over ibuprofen. Not sure exactly why though.

Ibuprofen can have advantages because it will do more to ease inflammation. So for teething, it's usually a better option. When DS was really little we gave only acetaminophen but I think after 6 months he could have ibuprofen and that has worked much better.

We do the same. Acetominophen for faster relief, ibuprofen for longer lasting. In the cases where the fever wasn't handled by one, we got the ok from the pedi to alternate the two kinds. So when we were half way through the dosage period of the first kind used, we would dose with the other. We only did this when absolutely necessary.

We mostly give Charlie acetaminophen because it's faster acting, but would give him ibuprofen before bedtime because it lasts longer.

Olive has had at least 4 fevers in her first year of life, and they have gotten up to 105. Acetaminophen doesn't really seem to help her, so we stick with ibuprofen.

What pain medication do you typically give your LO?
