It only works if we do it in the context of hands on the clock or using a timer. Telling my son he has 5 more minutes doesn't mean anything to him.

Yes! We set the timer on our phone and once it goes off, she knows. Makes transitions a lot easier!

I did this as a nanny. It made transitions (especially leaving the pool/park and bedtime!) so much easier! I'm sure I'll continue it with my kids one day!

Maybe I need to start doing this with LO1, he's 26 months and getting him out of the bath is our biggest struggle. Every night he melts down because he doesn't want to get out, even if all the water is gone.

Yes we started doing this a few months ago because DD was having ridiculous transition tantrums. It has helped SO much. She is 26 months now and we usually do 5 minutes then 2 minutes, then its time to move on.

A funny side effect of this is she has started telling us and her toys "2 minutes" as a warning if we are doing something she doesn't like...we realize we really do say it alllll the time but it helps!

Yes because he's always saying things like 3 more minutes or 5 minutes. We've actually started using Siri on the phone sometimes. I ask her to set the timer for X number of minutes and tell him that when it rings, the time is up. It works really well!

We've had to do that for a long time because DD1 doesn't do well with transitions. We get a much better reaction than if we spring it on her

I have recently started giving my oldest LO timed warnings. For example, I will tell her 5 minutes until rest time, once this show is done it's time to do X, Y, or Z. I don't know why I didn't try this sooner! She does so much better when she gets a warning instead of me just saying, "ok time's up!".

Do you give your LO timed warnings? Does it usually work out well?
