They had a discussion about this on the local radio the next day about this. The thought process was that you give to your romantic partner and your kids but that's it. And it's not expected that kids give to parents, regardless of age.

I did a small mixed bouquet for my mom and my mil in vases picked out by DD. They both watch my kids alternating days during the week (for free) so I try to get them something for most holidays. I consider it a holiday to express love to your loved ones, not just to your romantic partner.

I just wanted to come back and say I get my mom a gift because I want to - she has no expectation of one. She does so many little things for me throughout the year but won't accept things from me without a "reason." So I like using the excuse of Valentine's Day.

Also I think it just depends on how you view the day. I don't focus on romantic love - just love for the people in my life. In middle school, high school, and college I baked treats and made cards for all of my friends - guys and girls. It's fun to let people know you love and care about them.

@Mamatimes3: @Mrs. Champagne: Agreed. My husband gives my widowed MIL a bouquet of flowers (he pretends like they are from our 2 year old son.) They aren't red roses or anything but springy type flowers. I think it's sweet.

@Truth Bombs: if your son sent you flowers for Valentine's Day, would you think it was creepy? 🤔

@Mamatimes3: I think it's sweet.

My mom wished me a happy Valentine's Day via text and I wished her the same back. If we had seen any grandparents (they are far away) we probably would have made them a card. DH didn't talk to his parents that day, but they sent cards and $20 for each of our kids.

I gave my mom a card from the kids.

My husband sent flowers to his mother every year on Valentine’s Day until she passed away. They weren’t roses but another assortment. I never considered it strange. I hope my boys remember me on Valentine’s Day when they are older. To me, it’s not just a romantic holiday. But a day to show love to those you care about.

I texted MIL a pic of DS in his red and pink Valentine's outfit, but only bc DH asked me to. I talked to my mom about something unrelated and def didn't send her a card. She got DS a little something "for Valentine's" but she always buys him stuff.

I bought a pack of 8 cards and let my son decorate them with stickers and addressed them to whoever he decided, so my mom and dad got one of those. Nothing else! I did not call, and though we did text, it was unrelated to Valentine's day. I would definitely let go of any guilt you feel.

I sometimes have my kids send valentine cards to extended family, but just because they're little and it's cute to send out stuff they make (handprints, fingerprints crafts, etc.). I also get my kids small gifts, but again, they're little. I feel like adult Valentine's Day (if you choose to celebrate, because I view it as a hallmark holiday) is between romantic partners. Maybe if my father had just passed away and I knew my mom would be sad on Valentine's Day? Then I might recognize it for her, but otherwise...nope!

We went over the day before and my LO made her a card bc she wanted to. I attached it with some chocolate I was given (I work with kids so I get a lot of chocolate gifts on holidays). Although it was a nice gesture and my mom appreciated it, it wasn’t a big deal nor would she expect more or expect it would become a yearly thing.

Our family is not big on mass produced holidays. I feel like it’s silly that after every holiday, there are other holiday marketing that gets started right away.

We don't do anything for VD. Well, now that we have a child we send valentines to school so he is not left out. But I think it is a silly holiday and would rather focus on days that have more meaning to me (like my anniversary).

I think it is bizarre and frankly a little presumptuous for your mom to have VD expectations for you.
