I always call my parents, usually get a card, and sometimes get a gift (go in on one with my sisters). We (3 kids) plan to pay for an Alaskan Cruise for our parents 40th anniversary in a few years since they've always wanted to go.

We used to get a gift for my in-laws, but we're no contact now.

My mom usually gets something for us kid's anniversaries; like last year she gave me husband and I a gift card to a favorite restaurant, this year she let me pick out a new quilt set and bought it for us.

We do for milestones. My parents celebrated 30 years recently so we got them a gift. Otherwise we sometimes we give a card sometimes we don't.

@bhbee: Did this exact same thing for my parents' 40th anniversary. Other than that, nothing for my parents or my in-laws other than a call or a FB post. When I was little I used to do a small gift for my parents' anniversary but stopped later.

We don’t give either of them anything. I think we will/would for the 50th, prob something pretty big. But all the ones in between we don’t.

On the flip side, my MIL is an over-gifter and will give a gift for any reason. Our anniversary is tomorrow and she always gives us a gift card to the same restaurant (which I do appreciate because we don’t go to it otherwise). It’s our 6th anniversary so I just think it’s weird haha. But I’ll take it ;-)

We always give my parents a gift (renewing their Netflix account for another year!), but we never give his parents a gift. I think it's cultural or something. His family isn't as big on gifts - they don't really do anything for each other's birthdays or anniversaries, whereas my family gives gifts for everything!

@bhbee: that’s a great gift! I’m sure they will love it.

Who knows maybe if all of our parents stayed together and were still married to our actual parents not step, their anniversaries would feel more special to us to warrant a gift.

I usually call my parents and wish them a happy anniversary, and they do the same for us. I would send a card or go in on a gift with my siblings for a milestone one.

@periwinklebee: We buy for all those occasions too, and we also send a card for Grandparent's Day. It feels like a lot of gifts to buy, so that's how this conversation came about with my SIL.

I think the only people who should celebrate an anniversary are the people in the marriage. I don’t do anything for my family, and I don’t expect them to do anything for us. Although we don’t really celebrate our own anniversary either...

I usually call and acknowledge it, or post something on Facebook. I don't give cards or gifts. That's for my parents. DH's parent's are divorced. His dad is remarried, but it's a strange relationship and I doubt DH even knows their anniversary date.

My DH and I have been giving his parents an anniversary gift for the past few years, and I just found out today that my BIL and SIL only give them a card. Now I'm wondering what other people do.

We usually give them a gift card to a nice restaurant or a gift basket of some kind. We typically spend about $50 on their anniversary present.

I've enabled multiple votes in case you do something different for each set of parents.
