We budget $150-200 for LO. That includes Santa and stocking stuffers. I have my list all made out and it will be on the lower end this year, she's only 2 so for her she just loves the excitement of opening gifts and the value doesn't mean as much. I dread the older years when they want everything and it all costs so much. Definitely going to drill the meaning of Christmas (to us) into my kids, and when they get old enough adopt a family to show that not everyone can afford the nice things. Hopefully put things into perspective.

We budgeted $200. T is an only child for now and this is his first christmas lol. I don't want to buy a bunch of random toys since he's too little to "want" things so I'm having trouble using the remaining $140.

I agree with previous posters that 6 is old enough to learn quality over quantity! Also less gifts for DD since she's young is a good thought.

@Mamaof2: we spend the same as you per kid, if we can. However, we don't buy them much besides books throughout the year. So I feel like it's justified.

I agree with @bunnylovesbear that at this age I would be more concerned with the number of gifts being equal rather than the dollar value. If you don't spend as much on your daughter., maybe just put the rest in her savings account?

Agree that six is probably old enough to learn the difference between lots of smaller gifts and a "big" gift.

Budget for LO will be extremely limited this year. We already got a ton for his baby shower and he does not need more.

At such a young age, I'd be more concerned with keeping the number of gifts each kids received equal instead of their value. Especially since you said his sister is younger...she won't know the difference.

My kids are so different in age that's it's not possible to set a budgeted amount that's equal for each kid. By Christmastime, daughter will be two days shy of 14 and my son will be 2.5yrs. And we'll have a 2 month old. I'm always more concerned with making sure they get one big gift that I know they would Reeeeally want/like...usually one "big" Santa gift and one "big" parent gift.

@Mamaof2: maybe try to explain that some toys are big toys and some toys are little toys and he can have just a couple toys if he has a big toy, or lots of little toys, and let him pick?

I don't have a budget bc LO is little. I doubt I'll spend more than 50-75 on her, except for maybe some clothes which i'd buy either way bc her 9-12 mo wardrobe is pretty sparse.

We haven't set a budget for Christmas yet, but since she needs, well, nothing, it probably will be small. That being said, I think 6 is plenty old enough to understand the one toy he gets is very expensive compared to a bunch of smaller ones.

@Mamaof2: it's still so early I would keep am eye on sales, black Friday deals etc. Amazon lightning deals are pretty much all toys starting from the month of November!

This year for DD 1 her big gift will be a DIY dress up trunk. I want to build her a wardrobe out of a old Dresser and thrift finds for dress up clothes. Then probably books and and stocking stuffers on the side.

DD 2 I might look for a activity cube and maybe some clothes.

I'll like to stay under $75 this year.

@hilsy85: I agree!

Maybe you can have a conversation that Santa needs to do more work to make all those Legos, so he won't have time to make as many gifts for him.

I don't have a set amount, but we know we are getting her a kitchen, which is a big expense. So we aren't going to get her too much else.

I personally think that 6 is old enough to learn a lesson about quality over quantity, so to speak. I don't know how that would play into the whole Santa thing though...would he buy that Santa has limited resources for each kid?

I don't yet because Xander is still young and I'm only planning on getting him one or two things. But I fully intend to have a budget for both kids when they are older!

In your situation, if I decided to get the Star Wars set (and those things ARE expensive, stupid Legos...), I might try to combine DD's gifts so that the number of presents to unwrap are the same, even though DD will get more items total. You could also try to get a BUNCH of inexpensive items with the rest of your $50 to even out the total number of gifts.

Good luck - this kind of stuff is hard and I'm NOT looking forward to it!

DS is 6 and I have always known that as they get older the price of gifts goes up!

I usually like to keep it at $150 per kid which when they were younger went a long way.

We were at Target and DS saw a Star Wars At-At lego set and he is obsessed with it - but it costs $100.

He went home and immediately wrote a note to Santa and include about 5 "pleases" - ha!

I told him that it wont guarantee the gift but he assured me it will - sigh....

So, If I spent $100 on that I would have $50 to spend on a few other things.

Problem is his little sister would probably get more gifts because things she likes is cheaper.

WWYD?

I am afraid come Christmas he will be more concerned with the # of gifts than the value (considering he is 6!) even though he REALLY wants that lego set.
