Yes, DS often wakes up 30-45min after going to bed. He usually needs rocked back to sleep or to have his pacifier replaced. He'll then sleep for an hour or two before waking to nurse. Our baby doesn't do those heavenly-sounding "long stretches"...

@snowjewelz: Aw poor thing! Well if it is something GI related, I hope it's something she can get relief from easily!

@snowjewelz: You have my sympathies! We were originally planning on waiting to sleep train until around 6 months, but he would get seriously pissed and cry when we tried to rock him to sleep, so we decided to give sleep training a try. Our ped backed us up on the decision, and looking back, I'm so glad we did it! Now, at 7 months old, most times when I try to rock DS before I put him to bed at night, he starts reaching out for his crib.

My son did this for a short while. At the time he was sleeping in the rock and play so I would just go in and rock that. We found if we reallllllly burped him well before bed time he wouldn't wake up at that point.

@snowjewelz: I'm not positive it's stomach related! I do think some/many of our issue was sleep crutches. Up till the point we sleep trained I could count on one hand how many times we'd put our LOs down awake. I always nursed them to sleep and always ran in to nurse them every time they made a peep in the MOTN. They just never developed any self soothing skills at all. Sleep training helped that, although I still nurse to sleep for most naps and every night at bedtime. I just like doing it. But my kids are still miserable sleepers. My theory is that they wake up because of tummy troubles MOTN but need me to get them back to sleep because they don't have great self soothing skills even now at 11 months.

My lo visibly wakes 30-45 min after she falls asleep for every nap and bed. At bed usually she just rolls over and goes to sleep now (10.5 mo) but sometimes she does still need rocked.

@Mrs. Pinata: @twodoghouse: Now I wonder if DD has stomach issues too cause she's the same way...

I can't seem to put my 4 mo old DD down between 7-9, sometimes 10! Some nights are better and some nights are worse.

My remedy is going to be sleep training sooner than later... B/c she doesn't really like nursing to sleep (bottle preference), and now rocking isn't even reliable!

My LOs did this for a couple months. They just couldn't bridge that first sleep cycle. I'd look at the clock at wake up and it would always be 42-45 minutes into sleeping (which was their max. nap time as well). They were older by the time it got really bad (5.5 months) so we went ahead and sleep trained (CIO). Up till that point I nursed them to sleep and nursed at every little noise because I didn't want one baby to wake the other (twin problems). Sleep training did not fix a lot of their overnight issues, but it did fix the 45 min thing. Coincidentally, my LOs also have GI issues (reflux and possibly a motility issue though we haven't been through testing yet). I do wonder how much of their sleep issues were caused by GI discomfort.

We had this same issue during the 4 month sleep regression (which started for us right around 3.5 months). DS had reflux that was/is well-managed on Prilosec. For around 2 weeks I just went back up and nursed him back to sleep - not the best long-term strategy, but sleep was so bad at this point that we were in survival mode. Around the same time, rocking him to sleep stopped working consistently - he seemed to get more upset when we rocked him than if we put him down without rocking. So, at 4 months, we did some sleep training (Ferber) to go to sleep. The first night he fussed/cried for about 20-25 minutes, the second night it was more like 10-15 minutes, and since then (he's now 7 months old), the "wake-within-an-hour-of-bedtime" phenomenon has never happened again! Obviously sleep training doesn't work for everyone, but in our case it worked great for this specific issue. (We still have one MOTN feeding but I'm more hesitant to push that issue because he's not the best eater in the world/is more of a snacker thanks to the reflux.)

DD does this occasionally and I try first to just go in and put the pacifier in and stroke her hair, then walk out. It might take 2-3 times for her to fall back asleep but she usually does. If she doesn't, most times I end up nursing her (not a great strategy) and she goes back to sleep.

I didn't experience this with mine, but having read so much about sleep training I remember reading that babies transition to their heavier sleep cycle around 45 minutes or so and sometimes they can fuss/fret around that time? Is she full-on freaking out or fussing? If fussing, it sounds like you should be okay to leave her be for 5 or 10 minutes to get settled. If she's really melting down, I'm not sure how you would handle that.

So, 3.5 month old DD had colic and reflux (she's on meds now, keeping the reflux under control). We also discovered a dairy intolerance a few weeks ago. All of that contributed to poor night sleep at bedtime. So, from about 2-3.5 months we held and rocked her at bedtime until about 10pm or so, gave her a "dream feed" since she was sleeping, then she would fall asleep for the night, and thankfully sleep for 3-4 hours.
Once we got the dairy out of her diet we were able to start putting her down to sleep after her nighttime bottle areond 8. She would sleep 45 mins or so at a time and we'd have to go back in and soothe her a few times until about 10 pm when we gave her another bottle, and again, she'd sleep well for a few hrs.
Then there were a few nights where she screamed about that 10pm bottle, so we let it go and one night she sleep from 8pm-2am!!! Then, she slept until morning! It was miraculous! However, since that night it has gotten worse again. The last two nights she only sleep for 30 mins before waking up and then needed to be rocked(wouldn't be soothed any other way) and back to the 10 pm bottle.

Did any other kiddos have this issue? I know part of the problem is that she was used to us holding and rocking her at that time. But, we did it because she needed it with all her tummy issues. Now, she doesn't need it and im not sure how to get her to sleep in her bed again. She does it at naps and she did it that once so beautifully so I know she's capable!

Who has survived this and what did you do?
