It is a small, beanie baby sized dog (a springer spaniel) - my sister got it for her one visit because it looked like my sisters dog. Her plan had been just to give it as airplane entertainment, but LO latched on and adores the thing! It's not really made for that much love and was wearing out fast, so we searched until we found another one (and would have bought more if we found them!) </p> <p>For the big swap, we just told her one day that Doggie was getting a bath while she went to the park and presented her with the new one once she got home. I always tried to hide the switch -- switching the one she's got for a clean one while I throw the "dirty" one in the wash -- but around 16 months she started giggling and handing me the "dirty" lovey and reaching a hand out for the clean one that I was hiding behind my back. Luckily, she got attached to two totally different stuff animals so we usually only bring one with us when we go out. I'm also planning on getting her another similar one for her Easter basket (one of her loveys is a grey jellycat bunny, so I just got a different colored bunny). I'm hoping she'll like that as much as the other one so we can have another backup. I wouldn't try to get another duplicate one though. Another is the one she has most of the time and the third is hidden for laundry emergencies. We've rotated them fairly regularly and haven't had any complaints about it not being the "right" one. Sometimes on Fridays, she won't let me put the school teddy in her backpack, insisting instead on holding it, and when we get home, she'll have both "school teddy" and "home teddy". I usually try to separate the two once she's distracted. She immediately knew it wasn't her real lovey though, so that plan didn't really work. Recently she's become obsessed with books though, and sleeps with them... and brings them out of her room every morning. Oh my gosh, I just realized that books are her new lovey!</p> <p>I guess we don't really need a backup lovey to her books, because she has a few favorite books and rotates between them. If I could re-do the lovey situation though, I'd have gotten a backup A&amp;A blanket for her as soon as she got attached to it - and used them both interchangeably.</p> <p>Do you have a backup lovey? </p>
