We couldn't live without one. We've never had an issue with other animals using it and my son looks at it and pats it occasionally but doesn't do anything else. I used to be away from the house for 10 hours a day and I didn't think it was fair to leave them inside that long. It can be closed when we're out of town or the weather is bad. We worried that we would lose a ton of A/C through it, but it has a double door design that actually works really well at keeping indoor "weather" in and outdoor weather out. So far, the only negative has been that the dogs bring a lot more dirt into the house because of it.
