It's original from 1915 :) I love having a fireplace. I do change the decorative things that are up there from time to time. Right now we've got a couple a pictures (one large one), some vases and candles. But for some reason, the builders who worked on our house only drywalled the fireplace, which sticks out about two (!) feet into the room, and didn't put any finishes on it!</p> <p>So there's this HUGE mantel surface that doesn't have the look of a mantel. DH wants to build a mantel out of wood to go on top and make it less boxy. I want something to hang stockings off of, haha!</p> <p>In my childhood home we didn't have a fireplace, so we had the tradition of hanging our stockings off the stair railing.
