Yes! For my line of work, I am used to writing formally and will default to that when not thinking about tone. I also tend to be more curt and to the point when writing on my phone which I use 90% of the time.

Yes! All the time. So I find I over use a exclamation point now.

I use ;) a lot to soften my sarcasm. I definitely see tone misconception at work in emails. Some people can be so formal when they write but it's usually their intention to be not formal.

@sera_87: You just need to do what I do and add the tags for people, so they know you're being sarcastic.

<sarcasm>Like this</sarcasm>

Lol I really overuse exclamation points! Sometimes I need to go back through and get rid of some because it looks so stupid. I am really a happy person, but I tend to overdo it :)

I'm awful at this. Mostly because IRL I'm super sarcastic. There needs to be a sarcasm font :/

I use exclamation points, smiley faces, and "lol" like its going out of style (and I'm not a hugely smile laughy loud person in-person). I have found myself getting my feathers ruffled several times with people who aren't like that in texts bc I think they are being short with me

I do ok, although I know sometimes I have trouble.

I also have trouble expressing myself. I'm an incredibly sarcastic person so I constantly have to check myself before posting to make sure it doesn't come across wrong.

And yea, I over use exclamation points and emoticons as well! LOL

I have noooo idea if I read tone correctly or not!
I suspect I have a tendency to read things in a negative light, assuming the worse. But I'm definitely aware of it. I think that's why I use a lot of exclamation points and smiley faces in my e-mails, texts, etc. I have a friend who's responses are always very terse in her e-mails/texts and I always wonder if she's mad at me!

This is why I way overuse emoticons and exclamation points; I feel like they soften the tone of whatever I'm trying to say.

I think sometimes I take things the wrong way when reading things online, or even through text. Sarcasm/rudeness/sadness/excitement doesn't transfer well through typed words. To me, there is such a big difference between "Ok that's fine" and "Ok, that's fine! :)" I try my best to make it clear how I am feeling, so it can't be taken the wrong way. DH thinks I'm nuts when I say I think someone is upset/mad, he says I am always reading into it the wrong way. Which is probably true ;)

Are you good at reading tone either way via the internet/text?
