@Beehive: huh, ours is the Verizon bundle so I wonder how reliable it is too.. Tho Fios is supposed to be underground? But yeah, it takes those kinda of events for us to realize that phone and internet are not reliable at all!

@FliegepilzHut: many large companies use VoIP (voice over IP) vs. landline technology. You still use a traditional phone, but the call/technology is internet based.

Vonage and magic jack are residential VoIP carriers; they are not regulated like actual telecom carriers, so your call quality and rates are not regulated by the state utility commissions. They work for/in some people/places better than others.

@snowjewelz: This is what happened to us during Hurricane Sandy - no power in our apartment for days and cell phones not working. We had a landline but one through our cable, which also lost power. Our very old school neighbor had a hard landline, and it was wonderful knowing we could use it if we really needed to. Now we have a hard landline too, but I need to get a phone that will work if the power is out, keep forgetting!

We used to have one bundled in but the price was ridiculous and DH fought them tooth and nail to take it out of our bundle. The actual phone was like 9.99/month but then the taxes on it were like $12. So it was $22 for a land line we never used...

@Tanjowen: Yeah...I just can't afford to have poor reception, since that would actually negate the usefulness of the whole idea. The MagicJack may be a workable solution, though. Thanks!

@yoursilverlining: Wow! That's amazing. But there will always be big corporate clients, right? Or maybe not?

@FliegepilzHut: It is. I just saw in one of your previous replies that your service is spotty so that's probably not an option :-( . We have used Magic Jack before without any issues and found it to be pretty reliable even overseas.

Nope; I've never had a landline since moving out and I'm in my mid 30's!

I worked for a telecom company for a long time and it was always ackward that I wouldn't get a landline. Landline loss is more than 10% per year, so soon they will be pretty much obsolete.

We had to have a second phone for my husband's work, and we did the landline, and I HATED it. So instead, we went to Target and bought a $20 burner phone and we add minutes on as needed. Very cheap option, and we get about 100 minutes per month for 3 months for $20.

We have one, but it's not a traditional landline. We use OOMA, which is a VoIP phone. We only pay $3/month in taxes, but the device itself was about $100?

It wouldn't work in a blackout, though... so it's not a very good backup.

@FliegepilzHut: That makes sense!

In my last apartment (where I had spotty cell service), we were able to talk down the cost of our landline by setting it up so that we only received calls (we could make outgoing calls if it was an emergency, but we would be charged extra if we did). If people are usually calling you for work, you might see if that is an option.

We just have the bundled one. It worked out cheaper that way (we actually had phone with our last apartment because of the bundle, but didn't hook it up until we got our first house)

But the very first thing I did when I hooked up the phone in the house was register on the do not call list. We still get some unwanted calls, but not nearly as many as we did in the apartment. Telemarketers would call and it would pop up on my tv all the time, even though we hadn't hooked up the phone. It happens much less often in the house now that we are on the list.

We have been only cell phone for about 3 years now. Previously we had a landline only because of our security system. But now that we found a reliable security monitoring company that has affordable wireless options we dropped the phone. Don't miss it at all.

I asked about cancelling the phone, but they said it would end up costing the same (or more) to unbundle our services. We just have basic cable and net.

What would be the benefit of a landline over cell phone for work?

We had one (bundled with our cable subscription), but got rid of it about six months or so ago, because NO ONE ever used it (except marketers, political robo-dials, and collection agencies for whomever had the number before us...). :bummed:

Now I've realized that I would benefit from having a landline for work...but I really don't want to go back.

Is anyone else completely reliant on their cell phones? If you had to, would you go back to the cable company? Try a different local provider? Or possibly something like Magic Jack? I need to get this sorted out soon and would love some advice, if anyone has any!

ETA: I really only would need this to make local calls!
