You still use a traditional phone, but the call/technology is internet based. </p> <p>Vonage and magic jack are residential VoIP carriers; they are not regulated like actual telecom carriers, so your call quality and rates are not regulated by the state utility commissions. We had a landline but one through our cable, which also lost power. Our very old school neighbor had a hard landline, and it was wonderful knowing we could use it if we really needed to. The actual phone was like 9.99/month but then the taxes on it were like $12. So instead, we went to Target and bought a $20 burner phone and we add minutes on as needed. It worked out cheaper that way (we actually had phone with our last apartment because of the bundle, but didn't hook it up until we got our first house)</p> <p>But the very first thing I did when I hooked up the phone in the house was register on the do not call list. We still get some unwanted calls, but not nearly as many as we did in the apartment. Telemarketers would call and it would pop up on my tv all the time, even though we hadn't hooked up the phone.
