I empty the basin daily and wipe it dry and let it air dry in the tub all day before refilling at night. I clean it once a week with vinegar ! Our heater does have a humidifier but it can still get a little bit dry. DH cleans it about once a week with vinegar. My trick is I always used distilled water because then no mold, and I use vinegar and hot water to clean it out.
