Yes! When we don't turn one on, sometimes DD would wake up with nosebleeds. :( We are obsessed with keeping ours clean though and often clean it with vinegar.

@winniebee: that's the one! We have two.. One in each one's room. Filters are expensive so I stock up when they're on sale on amazon and I always pick one up with a 20 percent off coupon when I go to BRU. But I think they're worth it because of everything they catch. Super loud and perfect!

We have the Vicks warm mist and use it every night. I did find black mold growing by LO's window this weekend though. I cleaned it really well with bleach water and we clean the humdifier every night to avoid bacteria growth.

@mrs. wagon: Is it this one? http://www.diapers.com/p/graco-15-gallon-cool-mist-humidifier-28248

The Vicks didn't allow me to clean every inch and mold grew. No lie. I'm looking for a loud one (to drown out noise in our house) AND one that is easy to keep clean.

we have the Crane Frog, and so far love it! I haven't cleaned it yet and we've had it over a week but we haven't used it every night. I need to figure out how to clean it...but uh, mastitis and thrush have been keeping me busy..

it aims straight up though from the two eyes, which is nice. I haven't used it in a few days and I've noticed LO's skin has become dry from having the heat on.

we do live in a really old house that's prone to moisture (we have to empty the basement dehumidifier in the basement daily!) so that's a little nerve wracking but..I don't want her to have cracking skin.

@caffeinated: @shopaholic: the Britta definitely makes a huge difference for us. We have weird water... our town has its own water district. So we get pink and black mold very quickly in all of our bathrooms (even just the toilet water sitting there if we haven't flushed in 12 hours or so).

@mrs. wagon: Oh! Maybe that is how the one we have now is. Evaporation? IDK, it has no visible sign of steam or vapor or whatever! It just ...works. DH bought that one and I was just happy the floors never got wet! And thanks on the Brita tip! We'll have to try that!

@shopaholic: can't agree more about the direction! The Graco one is evaporation rather than cool or warm mist, which has made a huge difference for us.

We will use a humidifier in LOs room for sure. We were gifted one that has these claims on the box about antibacterial etc. stuff but haven't taken it out to test yet. I think as long as you make sure the moisture flow is going UP and around the room and not just settling down in one damp place you are good.
Also, sometimes if I wake up and the room smells kind of too stuffy or humid, I open the windows and let it air out. You don't want to keep the moisture always trapped in a stale room.

@kml636: The setting is probably too high or strong if your floor is wet at all. I had this problem before with the Penguin Crane humidifier (also with the way the steam/moisture came out). It can be really bad for your carpet too and definitely mold and fungus that way. I've gone through 1/2 dozen humidifiers and the shape and direction of the steam plays an important factor!

@mrs. wagon: We are the same way! Can't live without our humidifiers! DH especially loves the loud noise as a white noise! Same, we use these expensive, but easy disposable filters and order them online.

I'm going to get one. I've had one before and had no trouble keeping it clean so I'm not too worried about that. If I find that I can't keep up with cleaning it, then I won't use it. Baby isn't here yet, so I'm not sure if I'd use it all the time or only if she is sick or having trouble sleeping. If you don't use it every night that cuts down on the upkeep.

We got really fed up with cleaning and refilling humidifiers so we installed a humidifier system in our house. It is definitely a worthwhile investment for us since we will be living here for a long time. And it's so dry where we live.

@caffeinated: when we're not being lazy we keep a britta pitcher filled and refill it with that. It makes the humidifer's filter last longer since the water is cleaner... but when we're lazy we just end up switching filters more frequently and washing the parts more regularly.

I know, that had me reluctant to use mine again! But my city is SOOO dry and the colder weather makes it even worse. Someone told me that using distilled water is the best, but that means i'd be spending $4/day on humidifier water!

We can't live without ours!! We have two of the same one, one in each baby's room, and it's our white noise too. Since the baby moved out of our bedroom my skin has been SUPER dry and I've even gotten a couple of nosebleeds, so we might need our own humidifier as well!! haha.

We have the Graco humidifier because all the parts except the base are dishwasher safe, and they use disposable filters. The filters are expensive but I stock up when they go on sale on Amazon. And we have hard water so I like to know that I can take all the residue and chuck it in the garbage rather than washing out a filter and risking leaving any of it in there. I wipe out the base with antibacterial wipes and I wash all the parts in the dishwasher every few weeks. The funny thing is that the humidifier has bad reviews because it's so loud (and the expensive filters), but it's one of our favorite things about it! And it's cheap so we can just chuck it and get a new one if we feel like it's leaking or getting a little too old and we're risking residue mold or fungus.

After the Bees scared me with bacteria, mold and fungus talk, I got rid of the humidifier in Lo's room.

Since we've moved and the weather's gotten a lot colder, we've noticed that lo's skin has gotten dry.

I had dh get a nice and new humidifier and I'm determine to keep it clean and nasty free!
