For the first six months, Henry was in the same room as we were. That meant having it pitch black because DH can't sleep with a light on. Whenever I had to feed him, I would turn on the light either on my side of the bed (which lasted for about two months before I stopped), or the small table lamp in the kitchen (which is right next to our bedroom).

We got a dim enough bulb in the table lamp so that it wouldn't bother DH and give me just enough light to see into our room to change the diaper at the changing table. Then I would take Henry into the kitchen, attempt to breast feed him, give him his bottle if he was still fussing, then put him back to bed.

At nearly a year old and with a room of his own at six months, we got him a night light. That way I can make it over to his crib, get his diaper changed, etc and feed him without having to turn something on and off. The brightness of the night light didn't used to bother me but lately I've been considering taking it out altogether or finding one that's less bright.

LO sometimes stays up for up to an hour, playing in his crib quietly, before falling asleep after I've already put him to bed. I don't want to take away his light entirely because it keeps him quiet and happy but at the same time, I feel like the brightness of the light is what's keeping him up. I've been trying to push the glider in front of the night light, close to the wall, but I'm paranoid that it will somehow magically catch fire or something! More of a pregnancy fueled fear than a logical fear =/

No night light here either. We even have black-out curtains to insure total darkness.

We don't have a night light. If I need to go in there, I turn the light on. We always do a diaper change before a feeding, so I need the light. I prefer to have a light brighter than a flashlight or hallway light when I nurse and burp.

Why did your ped recommend this? You can move LO whenever works for you!
We have an angelcare monitor that has a light on it--very helpful for night feedings to seem him and pick him up!

We have a small night light in her room. It gives off just enough light so I can see when I go in there, but not enough to keep her awake.

Nope, we do pitch black. When I need to go in an nurse, I would use the flashlight app on my iphone to be able to see. Babies that young can only see in black and white anyway...so I don't think being in the dark is too awful.

@Bao: that's a good alternative. I never thought of that. So she had always been fine in the dark by herself?

LO does not have a night light in her room. When I need to go in and tend to her, or nurse her at night, I turn on the hall light and that gives off just enough light not to wake her, but so I can still see.

LO is two months old & today the pediatrician told DH and I that we should start trying to transition her to sleeping in her own room. I'm open to this but I can't just put her in their in the pitch dark. I need a nightlight right? Any recommendations?

Anyone not use a nightlight? How do you get around the room when you have to go in there? Also, how does your LO react to the dark?

-she currently sleeps in our room & the tv is always on so it provides the light.
