We purposely leave them on the bar area and don't bring them to the table. If one of us does want to look something up (sports scores, or if we're talking about some current event thing and want to look something up) we'll say, "Hey, do you mind if I look up ____?" When I have kids old enough to have phones, I think I'll be pretty strict about no phones at the dinner table. DH checks his fantasy football constantly if it's a football day. And I frequently pull mine out to show him things I've found online, funny pictures, stuff I like, etc. But there's no real way to explain to a fairly young kid that that's okay, but texting/playing/whatever isn't. So we'll probably have a blanket ban until they're old enough.</p> <p>Though now that I think about it, I always read when eating alone. So it may be just a rule about no distractions during family dinners, with some sort of caveats for other meals.
