Ditto what @hotchildinthecity said. I do CrossFit and go 2-3x/week. They offer yoga on Saturdays which is on hiatus, but once they get back, I'll add that to the routine. I think it's definitely best to have a set routine than not to!

@raspberries: It helps that I refuse to work out in the morning, so my only workout time is after 5:00 - which narrows down a lot of the classes. I took a few months where I tried different classes and finally found the ones I like the most and fit the best into my schedule. So after the initial leg-work there's not much to keep track of

@FliegepilzHut: It also help me to go directly to the gym from work. No time to talk myself out of going. I started doing yoga at the beginning of the summer and I am obsessed. I'm so much stronger!

I work out with a trainer (weight lifting) twice a week, so those are scheduled. I also plan to go to Stroller Strides every Monday.

Other than that, I try to do one more day of cardio (intervals or a run), but I keep the timing flexible. I try to think ahead and put it on my calendar so I don't forget, though.

Ideally I would do more cardio, but I want to keep my workout schedule sustainable, and right now this is what I can do with a 12-month-old.

@raspberries: Yes! But I think I'll try to keep the strength/cardio ratio about the same as yours!

@Amelieisme: This is true. Also, on days when I don't work, I may accidentally sleep in past my class start time (which I practically did this morning! ), if I'm not really "committed" to going...

I pretty much just follow this plan

http://www.simplysadiejane.com/2014/01/6-week-at-home-crossfit-inspired-workouts-week-1.html

but I do 4 or 5 days a week. I work out at 6 am on weekdays only and just do the plan in a never ending loop to keep it fresh and interesting.

@TemperanceBrennan: Thanks! I'm kind of in the same position...no kids and a flexible schedule EXCEPT for the times I'm at work. The built-in flexibility sounds really smart. I feel like I'm just getting started-- just a few weeks of yoga practice seems to have really increased my strength and endurance! I feel almost like I have a brand-new body! :silly:

@TemperanceBrennan: I wish I was organized enough to keep a list of classes that I want to take and when they're offered - I'll always see something at the gym on the weekends and think it looks cool, then never actually follow up and go to it.

A routine is the best way in my opinion. That way you have to actively chose to not go (and feel guilty if you don't-ha!). Otherwise you are constantly have to motivate yourself to schedule it. If that makes sense...

My ideal schedule:
Mon-crossfit*
Tues-run
Wed-crossfit*
Thurs-run
Friday-crossfit*
Sat-run
Sun-rest
*I inevitably miss one of these sessions because life happens so I avg 5x/week of exercise.

@FliegepilzHut: You could totally replace kickboxing with yoga/pilates or other cardio. I actually only got into kickboxing because it was the only class my gym offered that fit into my schedule, but now I love it!

@raspberries: That sounds like a really smart way to work out! Maybe I will try to start designing something similar. (No kickboxing, though that sounds awesome!). Thanks!

I do and it's the only way I can make it a habit. I like group classes and make sure to say "See you next week" to the instructor or other people in class as a motivator.

I choose workouts that fit seamlessly into my schedule so they are harder to skip. I have my "must-go-to classes" and "classes I will take if I feel like it" scheduled too so I feel like I have a little bit of flexibility if I am feeling lazy or motivated.

I also don't have kids yet and I'm really into yoga, so I realize I spend a lot of time working out.

My schedule is this:

Sunday: there is an early morning and late evening yoga class I'll take if I'm not busy
Monday: run right after I get home from work while it's still light out, yoga later that night
Tuesday: water aerobic right after work, yoga right after that
Wednesday: Run after work, late yoga
Thursday: water aerobics, late yoga class if I feel like it
Friday: Run after work
Saturday: There are 8:00am classes for water aerobics or yoga. I got to them if I'm busy and didn't have a late night prior.

I have one that allows for a little flexibility, which is why I'm able to stick to it:

Sunday: weight lifting
Monday: rest
Tuesday: kickboxing
Wednesday: weight lifting
Thursday: kickboxing
Friday: rest
Saturday: run

I alternate upper and lower body on lifting days (as well as intensity, depending on if I'm sore or not.) I also alternate how long and hard I run on Saturday - sometimes I do the track at the high school, sometimes treadmill, and sometimes just out and about in town.

So far this week, I have practiced yoga 3 times, swam once, and run (on a treadmill) once. Yoga last night was a Flow class and pretty intense, but so far I'm not sore at all, which is nice.

Do you have a fitness routine (every Monday this, every Tuesday that) or do you wing it? Can you give me arguments for either approach? I think the perk to having a set routine is that you're less likely to "cheat"...but does it breed discontentment, if Monday rolls around and you really don't feel like doing your usual routine?

What's your ideal balance of strength/cardio workouts in a week...and how do you space them?
