I teach Montessori preschool & the hand technique is what we use in school, so it's what we do with our 3 year old. I usually put my hand on his or else acknowledge him non-verbally in some way to let him know I'll be right with him. For when he can't physically reach us (like dinner or in the car), we use "excuse me please", but he mostly just launches right into whatever he wants to say after like 3 seconds!

We do the same hand thing, except I put a hand on LOs head too so they know I know they're waiting.

@mediagirl: I saw something about that technique, and I really liked it... but I actually need to start using it. The only thing we've done so far is tell her to say "excuse me" when she wants to say something when other people are talking... so she says it repeatedly until we acknowledge her :-/

She knows I will not acknowledge her at all unless she says "excuse me mama". When she does say excuse me I usually just respond and say "one minute, and mama will be right with you when I'm done talking" and she accepts that for the most part.

At 3, my lo has started interrupting conversations A LOT. I have started asking her to put her hand on my arm when she wants my attention and I'll get to her when I'm done talking to her dad or whomever I'm having a conversation with. Right now I have to remind her to wait and put her hand on me but then she actually does that and it reminds me to get back to her, too!

What do you do when your lo wants to talk and you're mid conversation with someone?
