We will create a more thorough will but realized we should have one just in case. It basically just gives everything to DD, names the executor and other beneficiaries, and states who we give custody too. I have been dilly-dallying because we have no real estate, no children, no personal property of any value, and all our retirement/bank accounts and life insurance policies have the proper beneficiary designations. The decisions are tough to make, but God forbid anything happen, I'd rather have made them than leave them to others to sort out. The process isn't hard. We asked our financial advisor for an attorney referral, had an info meeting and filled out paperwork, then signed. @MsLipGloss: I felt the same way! A large part of my husband's practice at that time was wills and estates, so our will was super straightforward compared to a lot of the more complicated wills and trusts he drafted on a regular basis. Flat fee, not hourly, so we could have used as much time and meetings as we needed. She charges $1850 if we want a trust as well, so if we eventually decide to do that, we'll just owe her the balance. That and avoiding probate court should anything happen in the absence of a will, but you don't want to leave that up in the air in the event of a disaster. You only get into complicated situations when you're talking about assets in the $2-5 million range.
