@swedishfish: aahh, I see, that makes sense. Just didn't want the allergist to get you to put off testing if you really wanted to get it done!

I haven't used either but that is such a strange comment from the allergist about waiting on the blood draw. I work at a pediatric hospital and a 2 year old is not going to like getting a poke and more then a 14 mo old. You will have to hold her down either way unless you want to wait until shes like 6 or 7! I would go ahead and get the testing done if you want it, that just not a very convincing reason to wait!

never heard of the AuvIQ. We have an Epi pen that we keep at home and one that stays at daycare.
He has an egg allergy.

@Vegmama: I don't think you could get a prescription for one unless your LO has had some sort of reaction (DD has had hives from at least two foods or irritants). But you could ask your doctor.

Do you think it's important to have them in hand if your LO has never had a reaction? My daughter is 7 months, and we are just starting food. I've often wondered if a first reaction (to food or bees) would warrant a pen? Or, is this something you realize, then keep a pen on hand for next time?

We have both and have used the AuviQ on DS1 after having a reaction to peanuts. When you're in the moment, having a device that can walk you through the process is so helpful.

@Mrs. Jacks: @swedishfish: thanks for clarifying! :) it's scary stuff! We have to carry a rescue med for DD b/c she had two afebrile seizures this spring, and is at risk of having more. I have such a hard time entrusting someone else with the responsibility of using her medication.

@Ocean girl: we went to an allergist because our 13.5 month old has had skin reactions to eggs and something we haven't identified yet (both times she's been around the same 3 things). We will get blood tests done when she's at least 2 years old.

But we are carrying an EpiPen because DH's grandfather has a severe shellfish allergy. The allergist suggested it because LO has had skin reactions to foods and there's a severe allergy in the family. It's a just in case tool that we hopefully will not need because we are waiting for the blood testing.

Really stupid FTM question - for those above who carry one of these rescue meds, is it because your LO has a known allergy and there is concern that there could be an anaphylaxic event in the future or is it a precaution thing in case they react to a new food or get stung by something they are allergic to?

I carry an epipen due to a wasp allergy, but thankfully have never had to use it. I'm so paranoid that DD will have the same allergy!

We have EpiPens for Xander. We keep one at his daycare and one in our diaper bag. Whenever someone is going to watch him, I bring out the EpiPen trainer and have them practice with it so they feel comfortable using the EpiPen if needed.

We got coupons for the new system, but had just bought four epi pens, so we held off on buying anything new. Next time we will fill with the new system-- not so much for me, but for our school providers. So far they haven't had to use it yet, but she has had two skin reactions at school, so it's a matter of when, not if, I think.

I felt comfortable with the EpiPen trainer as a training tool. I also watched videos and do the same for anyone who cares for R.

We've had to give it before and it works just as explained (just add it 5,000x more stress than when you 'administer' the trainer!).

@swedishfish: Auvi-Q still has a needle; I think the big difference is that it talks you through the process, which is fantastic. We carry both for one of the LOs I nanny, but they tend to leave the Auvi-Q with him for birthday parties or similar places where people might not know how to use the EpiPen.

We were given prescriptions for both along with coupons for copay discounts. I would've preferred an AuviQ because it talks you through the process. I feel that's better for the babysitter to have around.

DH got an EpiPen yesterday at the pharmacy. I'm trained in EpiPen use every year at school and just trained DH. I know it's not difficult but I'd feel better if we got an AuviQ for the babysitter.

DD has reacted to eggs and something that we haven't figured out yet. DH's grandfather has a severe shellfish allergy which is why the allergist recommended having an EpiPen or AuviQ around. The allergist recommended waiting till age 2 for a blood test because a wiggly almost 14 month old is not going to let blood be taken easily.
