DH is four years older than his sister and they have a great relationship. He always felt protective of her when they were growing up.

I grew up with two brothers. My brothers are two years apart, but they are 7 & 9 years older than I am. We have solid, fun, but not necessarily close, relationships -- mostly because they were out of the house before I hit middle school. As adults, we get along wonderfully, and for me that's so much more important than how close we were as children. They were sweet to me as a kid, but we couldn't share much then because of the age differences. Once I hit college & they saw me as an adult (not just as their baby sister) we've always had tons of fun together. There is a great deal of respect and love between us, which is definitely what I want for my kids!

I have a sister, so no (we are close though). DH has 2 sisters, one is older by 6 years, the other is younger by 3, and he's not that close to either, they are closer to each other, even though they are further apart in years.

I have a brother who is half my age... He just turned 15. I've always felt our relationship was more like aunt and nephew than sister and brother. But as he gets older, he reaches out to me more and I'm hoping to keep building our relationship. He's super excited to be an uncle for the first time in November!

On the flip side, my only other sibling is my sister who is only three years younger than me and she is my best friend. I wonder how things would be different if I had a brother closer in age.

I have a brother, 2 years and 12 days younger than me. We were extremely close growing up. We often played together as little kids, and then played on the same hockey team for several years, hanging out with the other guys in our neighbourhood who also played on the team. When I was a hormonal teenager, I was pretty unbearable, so we didn't see eye-to-eye. Once I moved out at aged 18, we bonded once again, and my brother would often come to me for advice. Even though he lives on the other side of the country, we're still really close. By comparison, DH's brother is three years younger, lives only two hours away, and they have never been close at all. I'm very close to BIL's wife, and we've been spending more time together, so now DH and his brother talk a lot more.

I have a brother and he is a year and a week younger than me. We're not close. I really think it depends more on the personality than the gender though. He just happens to hate kids, has no filter and a tendency to judge everyone, and manages a strip club, so yeah...not close. We basically see each other for holidays.

I have only one sibling, a brother 1.5 years younger. I have great memories of our shared childhood. He was a very difficult teenager and had problems as an adult that drove us apart. We don't have a bad relationship now, just not much of one. We do make an effort for our kids to visit and I talk to his wife a lot.

DS is almost 3 and I'm pregnant with a girl now. When we found out it was a girl we also mourned the idea of brothers, but ultimately I'm so excited to have a daughter and see the brother/sister relationship develop too! I've seen a spectrum of closeness with different genders and age gaps...you really never know!

My brother is 14 months younger and we've been close friends for most of our lives. It's great! Even though he's younger when we were growing up he'd clue me into guy stuff- not necessarily romantic stuff but just a male perspective.

My husband is much closer to his sister who is eight years older than he is to his younger brother who is 3 years younger. They just clicked better and really became close once he started college.

I have 2 brothers! One is almost 2 years older and the other is 4 years younger. When we were younger, we were typical fighting siblings, but now that we're older, we get along famously. It also helps that my brothers married 2 amazing women, and I married a pretty awesome guy, so the 6 of us get along great and have a ton of fun with each other!

I have one brother. We're 18 months apart in age. Growing up, we weren't close and fought like crazy. Once we went to college, things changed a lot between us. When I was applying for jobs, my brother helped me a lot. He's been there for a life events like wedding and babies. My brother called us when our first was super colicky with help.

I have two boys. I'm curious to see how they interact as siblings.

I have a younger brother... just about 3 years younger. We aren't close BUT I think older son / younger girl you have better odds maturity wise. Basically, by the time I wasn't a bratty preteen he was and we never caught up. He also has a slew of personality disorders (like legit mental health issues) which prohibit a close bond now that we're older.

My brother and I have very different personalities, interests and lives. I love him because he's my brother, and we're friendly, but we're just different people. I don't think things would be different./we would be closer if he was the same person, but female.

@lovehoneybee: I have one brother. He's just over 5 years older than me.
Our relationship was terrible growing up, we fought constantly and never spent any time together. My parents would send us to different grandparents usually so I don't even remember being around him that much. And because of the age difference he left home when I was still young.
Now our relationship isn't terrible, but he lives about 2 provinces away and I only see him once or twice a year.

I have 2 brothers, 4 years older and 2.5 years younger. It shaped me in so many ways - I always loved hanging out with guys, felt SO comfortable with men as an adult, and don't tolerate drama AT ALL. :) My older brother always said he measured girls he dated by how cool they were compared to me ;) (And his wife is WAY cooler than I am, haha)

My bro is 7 years younger. We did not get along as children, teens, young adults. Only now with much effort we regularly call and see each other. I don't think it entirely had to do with him being a boy; we just didn't click.

I have a little brother, slightly less than 2 years younger than me, and he's great. We got along really well growing up - it maybe helped that my family was very into travelling so we'd basically spend 6 weeks every summer in a VW camper van driving around Europe, so we were all we had. In high school he used to hang out with my friends all the time, and now that we're both adults we try to get together fairly often - we're actually going to see a comedian and out for dinner next weekend and I can't wait!

Growing up I always wanted an older brother, though, I think because of reading books where the older brother would stick up for his younger sister, so now that I have a son I'm hoping this next one is a girl!

I have one younger brother by 6 years. My mom always worried about us not being close due to gender and age gap. We're incredibly close!!!!! One time we even mentioned wanting to have a third sibling and he said no way! What if they were weird and didn't fit in with us?? Haha. Don't worry at all. I wouldn't change it for anything!! Even though we're in different states now, he's found internships around us and stays with us during those. It's awesome :)

I have one brother - he's 16 months older than me. Growing up, we'd play well together, but also fought like cats and dogs (although I think that's probably normal for the age gap - we were fighting over toys mainly). In high school, he was popular and I wasn't, so he pretended we weren't related while we were at school, haha. But now as adults, we're best friends!! We get together just to hang out 1-2 times a month! We have a very close relationship. :D

My brother is two years older than me. We peacefully coexisted until we were in high school. That's when we became best friends. We've learned a lot from each other and have fought and made up countless times. I would be a less loving, less understanding, less confident version of myself without him. Fun fact: he has dated every girl I've considered a best friend since age 12 - great for him, weird for me.

I have an older brother. We were 3 grades apart. I loved having an older brother. We got along during our childhood and became really close in high school. We lived blocks away from one another in NYC during our 20s, and hung out often. We left the city and his family stayed so we are an hour away by car (without traffic). I wish we lived closer so our kids to hang out on a more regular basis.

Following because this is on my mind too...

I have 3 sisters and am extremely close to each of them. We are TG due in a few days, and while I don't have a preference, I feel like I will be a mix of emotions either way since it is our last - thrilled for a girl so dd has a sister, thrilled for a boy so Dh has that experience and I can raise a son - but at the same time I will be sad that the other option will never come to light. If that makes any sense?? Or maybe I'm just a giant mess of hormones these days lol.

I have an older brother (2.5 year gap) and I literally haven't spoken to or seen him for over two years now. Part of the distance is due to his wife (long, complicated and miserable story!) and part of it is personality but the lack of relationship saddens me because our children will never have much of a relationship.

My husband, on the other hand, has a fantastic and pretty close relationship with his younger sister!

Yes, he's 8 years younger. He's insanely private and we're not very close. But he also lives in a different continent  We email once in awhile and I sometimes share plans and ideas, but it's nothing on a regular basis.

Because we're so far in age, I tend think of him more as a child, than a sibling. As I got older, I used to make it a point to play with him - for instance, I got into pogs because he was into it. I was way too old to play that! My boyfriend growing up used to be his "best friend" and breaking up was like a divorce for my brother. The same happened with my ex-husband. We really wanted to be there for my brother and spent weekends playing something nerdy with him. But when that ended, my brother also lost a family member. It gets to me thinking about it because looking back, it's a lot to consider for a sister and yet I was just a kid myself. I think the age difference was a lot tougher on him (the younger one) than it was on me. Although while growing up, I always thought he had it easy.
