Then one by one I discovered allergies to most fresh fruits and vegetables. I can eat them if they're cooked or processed in any way, but not raw. It's called oral allergy syndrome, and I'm allergic to any fruit or veggie that cross-reacts with birch pollen (the pollen that causes my seasonal allergies as well). </p> <p>Apples, pears, peaches, nectarines, plums, cherries, kiwis, cantaloupe, honeydew, all peppers, carrots, celery, almonds. It was horrible--I'd get hives and then they'd come back for days any time I got warm. It was about 1.5 years before I tested it and didn't get the hives anymore. Now I eat almost anything.</p> <p>I'm also allergic to the pesticide they use on red grapes so if they aren't washed right my mouth swells up.
