I do an apple cider vinegar rinse about twice weeks after shampoo and conditioner. It makes my hair shiny and soft. I started it to help with dandruff issues. It's done wonders for it.

Once a month I scrub my hair with washing up liquid (yes the stuff you wash dishes with), it strips every bit of oil from hair so requires lots of conditioner after, but wow it's like having baby fine soft hair again.

@grizz: I think its worth a try! I have very curly hair and didn't think this method would ever work for me because I can't just comb it on the days I don't wash - but rinsing with just water is all the style I need. My sister has straight, fine hair and hers is thin but she started doing it and is really happy with it now. Just prepare yourself that it might feel icky for a few weeks.

I really wanted the oil cleansing method to revolutionize my skin, it didn't make it worse, so I guess there's that?

I really wanted to like coconut oil, but it makes my skin really greasy, like it doesn't absorb but just stays on the top layer. Is there something to using it?

My mom pats white vinegar into her face after washing it at night... it has really tightened up her skin and reduced wrinkles! She spends $$$ on skincare products so hearing this from her really shocked me. Vinegar really does do everything.

@shellio: that's what I used: coconut oil, baking soda and cornstarch as well as tea tree and lavender essential oils. I haven't had any problems with rashes. The original recipe calls for arrowroot instead of cornstarch, but I have no idea where to get that here.

@yoursilverlining: thanks! I'll go check out my local co-op or Whole Foods to see if they have samplers. I have a memory of smelling their lip balm or something that was just like what you described.

@shellio: I try to do it at least once a week, but sometimes I'm a big slacker! I do definitely notice my skin is a lot nicer than I do it on a regular basis. @mrsjazz: I'm going to try that scrub!

@Happygal: Tough question....they are not scented like you would traditionally think, but they can have a strong plant/herbal scent to them, due to the quality of the plants they use to make the products. I think they smell good because the scent is fresh and clean. I don't notice any scent lingering once you apply it; I can say that - and I'm pretty sensative to scents as well.

@yoursilverlining: are those products strongly scented? I'm interested in them, but prefer scent-free products.

I make lemon sugar scrub, and I also use a lot of coconut oil on my skin. I also love putting a few drops of essential oil in the bathtub, especially if i'm feeling sick or run down. A little bit of lavender helps me fall asleep, and eucalyptus, tea tree, and peppermint help me when I'm congested.

@shellio: I've always wanted to try this, but I'm scared it won't work on my hair type! I have really fine, straight hair but I have a lot of it and it tends to get dry. Did you have a transition period before your hair balanced out?

@lamariniere: What ingredients do you use? I made a baking soda/cornstarch deodarant and it was great until it gave me a rash with my first pregnancy. Tried it a couple more times since with the same rash. So annoying. Now I just use the crystal which seems like it will last forever but I want to make my own again after its gone.

@Zbug: I have a couple of friends that I've recently turned on to the baking soda/ACV and they both said it took about a month before they felt like their hair wasn't greasy anymore. If you are interested I would definitely give it a try! Commit to it for a few weeks, though, because your hair will need some time to get used to it.

The ACV rinse really makes my hair soft and shiny. I started out doing both BS and ACV every day, as I would with shampoo, but I found that I didn't really need to do that and currently just use them every 1-3 weeks. My hair is thick and curly and the ACV allows me to comb through it just like conditioner. It is so nice not to have to worry about buying or traveling with shampoo/conditioner anymore, and great that I'm avoiding all the chemicals and decreasing the use of plastic packaging so to me those are some of the benefits. Also saving $$ :)

@mrsjazz: I'm going to try the scrub this weekend!!

@Zbug: I don't measure, but you want it to be thick, but moist and clumpy (that sounds gross). The lemon is the ingredient I use the least of. Make sure you wet your face before you put it on. I usually put it on my face and let it sit for 5-10 minutes, then rub on my face a little, and then rinse. I usually follow up with a mild soap.

@shellio: Ditto on the ACV. I still use shampoo and conditioner, but I use shampoo about once a month and do diluted ACV in a spritzing bottle.

@yoursilverlining: I do a honey, brown sugar, lemon juice facial scrub once a week and I've noticed a difference in my skin. Much better than the Apricot Isles scrub I used to use.

@yoursilverlining: I'm going to try the honey mask tonight!

@shellio: that's amazing. My hair is fine and gets greasy near my face if I don't wash it often. Wonder if I could get away with using baking soda. Does the vinegar make your hair soft? I do sometimes use vinegar in the wash to soften clothes.

@yoursilverlining: Wow, I am going to try the honey! How often do you do that? I could definitely use some improvement on my skin but am terrible about taking the time to actually do anything about it.

@Zbug: I actually stopped using shampoo and conditioner 3 years ago. I use baking soda every week or two as a cleanser and then rinse with a dilute apple cider vinegar solution. I've been very happy with this. People are always surprised when I tell them this so I guess my hair doesn't look like a total greaseball :)

Yes, I’ve got a couple!

Honey used as a mask is *amazing*! Honey has amazing and well documented medicinal properties so it will help to clear up your skin (your skin won’t go from bad to great overnight, but it will help) and it leaves skin so, so, so, so soft and bright.
Super easy to use: just pull all hair back from face (I do a pony + hairband for bangs) and spread honey on your face. Let it sit for about 30 minutes and just wipe off with a warm, damp washcloth.

I also use Dr. Hauschka products, which are all natural and contain no animal byproducts like a lot of skincare items and never test on animals. They are fabulous as well.

I definitely jumped on the coconut oil bandwagon last year. I used it during pregnancy. No stretchmarks but that was probably more luck than the coconut oil. I really like it as a moisturizer and makeup remover. I've heard that it can reduce wrinkles. Unfortunately, I haven't found that to be true! I have a few dark spots that I've been meaning to try to correct with lemon juice, but I keep forgetting to do it.
