Both my grandma and grandpa has Alzheimer's Disease (at different times, my grandma passed away long before my grandpa got his), but they always recognized family.
My other grandpa had non-Alzheimer's fronto-temporal dementia, and often knew he loves us, but didn't really know who we were. He thought my dad was his special friend. It was really rough.

It's very difficult to watch someone you love like that.
Mr. Jumper's grandmother has dementia and Alzheimer's and was already in a nursing home when I met him. He took me to meet his grandma a few times. I'm not sure who she thought I was, but she always complimented my cooking (I never cooked, or brought her food) and said how delicious Thanksgiving dinner was. I thought it was cute!

My nono had Alzheimers, and it was heart breaking.

DH's grandmother is 80 and has Alzheimer's. At first it was mild, and you could tell when she had her moments of clarity. Its progressed quickly, and now its really difficult to spend time with her. You can tell that she has no clue who anyone is or what's going on, but you know that she's trying. She always gives us the hugest smiles, but I know she's not sure who we are.

@MamaMoose: Oh no, so sorry to hear that. My grandpa had Parkinsons. I read that dementia could be a side effect from that, but I never knew if he had it because his body shut down and he couldn't talk to us. Such an aweful disease.

My MIL's mother lives with them and has alzheimer's. She is 97 and gets around the house fairly well. She usually thinks that the hubs is one of his brothers or else she doesn't think she's ever met him. Everytime she sees me she starts talking about how we grew up on the same street and is so excited to see me. It's hard on the entire family and I know that she can sense that.
She is paranoid about what is going on outside of the house and they have signs posted on all of the exterior doors saying that she is safe inside and no one is coming to get her. It breaks my heart to see her so scared. We have the same routine when we leave their house: she asks us where we are going & we say Atlanta. She says that it's too far to drive (she thinks shes in Kansas City & not Charlotte), and then she says that she's getting old and probably won't see us again. :(
I don't know how my MIL & FIL do it but I think they're getting close to moving her into a nursing home.

Yes, my maternal grandmother does as well. I haven't seen her, though, since she lives in Hawaii. She won't know who I am but it would be nice to see her before she passes. We are considering making the trip sometime this year. So sad about people getting older. =(

My grandmother has dementia. She is in a nursing home so part of me takes comfort in the fact that she's not super aware of her situation. She's almost completely blind from macular degeneration and she have very advanced Parkinson's disease. When she has moments of clarity she tells my mom and my aunt's that the way she is living is just no way to live and that breaks my heart.

My grandma is 93 years old and in hospice. She's had such a clear mind.... until now. She keeps telling my mom they're putting something in her food. It's the peanuts in a snickers bar! She also told on a poor nurse because she said the nurse said my grandma is too demanding and nobody likes her. No way would anyone working at hospice say that, they're wonderful there! At least she's been clear up to this point though.

My grandpa was so delusional towards the end. First he was pretty mean, which was so sad to see because he's such a sweet guy. He's say racist things to all the nurses. But then they put him on some good meds and he was as happy as could be. He thought he owned lots of land, had tons of money, and was staying at a nice hotel. If you're going to lose your mind, that's the way to do it!
