I do not have bad flying anxiety but I do get nervous if there's turbulence.. however I just flew this past weekend w DD (her first flights) and one of the flights was very turbulent and I didn't even really notice b/c I was distracted with DD trying to make sure she was calm/doing ok. So having DD with me actually helped my anxiety about turbulence.

I have anxiety but I feel like having DD with me calms me down because I need to concentrate on her. Also, just learning more about airplanes and how they work have eased my anxiety....my brother works for Boeing as an engineer and he's explained a lot of things about turbulence, etc in lay and terms for me and it's really helped ease my anxiety!

Yep. Another person who developed anxiety ad an adult over here. I used to travel for vacation several times a year but now can't and have had to drive for my last couple vacations and it sucks. But I'm scared of being on a plane again so not sure what to do.

I developed severe anxiety about 10 years ago after a really bad flight. My whole body was working on overtime to not move, my heart rate was super high and I was so stressed.

I talked to my doctor about it and he was able to prescribe, Colonipin (sp?) at .5 dosage and it has been a life saver. I take one pill, 30 minutes before boarding, for about a 3-4hr flight and feel no anxiety, no fear, no raceing heartbeat. If I did feel some fear or worry creep in after an hour or two then I would take another pill. Further, it doesn't make me loopy or feel weird, I'm exactly like myself just not totally freaked out by flying.

Once my LO was born 20 months ago and we flew all the time with her, I do feel like my thoughts to protect her have lessened my fear. In fact, the last couple of flights I've taken, I haven't had to take any medicine.

Good luck!

I definitely have a moderate amount of flying anxiety especially because I often get motion sickness that increases my stress at take-off, landing, and with turbulence. But honestly, I've found that flying is a lot easier with my DD because she is very distracting and her needs take precedence over mine. I've never once had an issue with DD along, but when just flying with DH it is more pronounced.

@WinterBee: I think I might try to force DH to quit his job if he was a pilot lol! DH would always tell me that just like driving on the road, the road is bumpy too.. So turbulence is just a part of flying and bad turbulence does not mean we're gonna crash! But it's like I know this is completely stupid, I can't help it that the anxiety doesn't go away!

@snowjewelz: I'm the same, and also developed it while an adult, weird!
I always imagine the plane blowing up, or crazy crashes, completely irrational.
What makes it more ironic is that my DH is a pilot! I'm getting (somewhat) ok with flying in smaller planes with him, but I'm still pretty bad when we fly commercial, I'm constantly asking him, what's that noise? Why are we doing this/that? It helps because he can explain everything to me and that puts me at ease.
I would think it would get better with a LO, your focus will be more on her and making sure she's ok than on yourself and your own insecurities.

I am afraid of flying. I always think I'm going to die. When I flew with LO two summers ago I wasn't as afraid because she didn't deal well with flying so I was too focused on her.

I'm more afraid of cars, though.

I never did as a kid, then I developed general anxiety as an adult (due in part to stress over graduate school and my mother's cancer), and that led to major anxiety while flying. It was at its worse in the year after my mom died. Now that a few years have gone by and my general anxiety seems to be at bay, I've noticed that my flying anxiety is also mostly gone. We flew with LO for the first time a few months ago and I thought I'd be a wreck, but I was fine. Now I just have to work on my driving anxiety!

I was super scared of flying before LO arrived, like I thought I would die every time I got on the plane. I wasn't always like this, it probably started in my mid twenties and got worse over time. Take off is the worst part for me...then I settle a little after about 20 minutes. Flying has got much better since having LO because I am pre-occupied with taking care of her and trying not to inconvenience surrounding passengers that I kind of forget to be so nervous!

Oh yeah, definitely! I developed it as an adult AND I travel for a living! It sucks big-time. I'm looking at a career change, because I have so much anxiety when I fly. I literally have my phone out during take off and landing with a picture of my son, so I can see him if anything goes wrong...it's crazy.

@Anagram: That's good that LO actually helps to distract you! That is weird that you grew up with flying (and even stunt flying) yet you still develop moderate anxiety!

It's the same with roller coasters.. I when on them np into teenage years, then suddenly they scare me to death?!

I don't have *severe* flying anxiety, but I definitely have a moderate amount. I also hate take offs/landings and all turbulence freaks me out. This is ironic because my dad was a pilot for AA and also flew smaller jets for fun, so I've been flying since I was really young and have even been in the plane when my dad has purposely rolled the plane over.

Anyway--to your question. I find that when I fly with LO, it's still in the back of my mind, but keeping her happy (not crying, not annoying other people), takes up a lot of my mental energy so I can't focus so much on all the "what ifs" that could go wrong.
