We know zero "interesting" people. Ha! I mean I love our friends, but we all work regular ass jobs and no one is a doctor/lawyer/banker/actress/inventor or anything like that.

I've been wanting to throw a dinner party forever, but it would just be our close friends and family, no interesting guests required (or available).

we have casual stuff, sometimes we grill, and sometimes people bring stuff over. i'm in a bunco group and we meet once a month and have a different theme every month and it's so fun. we've done breakfast for dinner...white trash...next month is olympics. white trash was a fancy hot dog bar, bbq chips, junky beer, margaritas, and mac and cheese! everyone dressed up too. i always look forward to it every month.

@Running Elley: Oh, I've done that! Every year, Hubs and I host a big Halloween Party, so last year we decided to do a big Murder Mystery. It was sooooooo much fun!

We did this: http://www.dinnerandamurder.com/games/4deuces.htm

@Running Elley: I did that twice. It was soooo fun. I told them their characters ahead of time so some of them dressed up. Ooh. I gotta do that again one day!!!

This is kind of silly but I’ve always wanted to throw a themed mystery dinner party! …Where everyone has a “character” to play. You can buy kits to do them. I just think it would be SO fun….especially since I think in most cases no one knows who “the killer” is until the end.

ETA: Like this. http://www.nightofmystery.com/about/

@regberadaisy: So basically, everyone gets bombed haha!

I would definitely come... except for the part where it would cost me a million dollars in daycare to leave the house while the kids are sleeping.

I love the idea of throwing fancy dinner parties and having an eclectic mix of people!

We do throw one or two nice dinners a year (usually around the holidays) but we always end up inviting the same people. Our usual suspect of friends, so no new interesting people. But I'm terrible at small talk and getting to know new people, so I guess I am happy/comfortable with the way things are :)

I would love to throw fun swanky cocktail parties where people have to dress up. Appetizers only and everyone brings a bottle of wine!

Between our close group of friends, variou couples "host" dinners all the time. No set menu, just whenever a couple decides to make dinner and have guests over. Nothing fancy though.

@mrbee: I think your dream maid stopping by over afterward would be AWESOME!
Extreme potential: They are really sweet, enjoy playing with kids but don't have any yet--- thus have free time and are IDEAL candidates for babysitting.

We would like to once a month but it ends up happening every 4 months. This weekend we invited two younger couples, newlyweds and about to be engaged. We have been married two years. The males work with my husband and have extreme potential to babysit. They are on the quieter side but it is nice because it gave everyone a chance to talk since nobody was dominating. My husband is on the quieter side so it was good for him too. I cooked everything. Sometimes we potluck but since they are younger and could be our sitters we made sure to go all night.

We throw dinner parties... Usually we design it around a great wine that we've found or some other fresh element from farmer's market.

As for the guests, we just invite our best-est friends and neighbors... That usually means some lawyers, docs, software engineers, one I Banker, a VC, a producer and a graphic designer... so pretty eclectic.

Phil Dunphy from Modern Family lives in our neighborhood and we'd love to have him over, though there is no real reason to ever even speak. We have seen him at our local lunch spot though!

"Dinner party" sounds so grown up! Have have sit-down dinners often with out friends. The girls spend all week planning the menu, we divvy the responsibilities and on party night, they come in the afternoon to help me set up. Then the boys come just in time for eating. Ugh. But they always clean up. Afterwards, we play board games or Mafia.

Anything else seems sooooo grown up and mature!

I would love to start having dinner parties once a month or so... maybe with a group of friends, and we each bring one interesting friend or something. Kind of like Dinner for Schmucks, but in reverse.

The ideal guest would be doing something interesting or cool, and would mix well with the other people there. Some people from the internet, some from publishing, some designers... that's about everyone we know. It'd be fun to also have actors, directors, authors, and academics... but I don't know many. In any case, our ideal dinner party would be a fun eclectic mix of people, and there'd be a lot of good wine and (catered) food. Plus while we're dreaming, let's have a maid come by the next morning!

Do you throw (or regularly attend) dinner parties? If you threw a dinner party, what kind of people would you want to attend?
