DH tried crating our pup when he was younger but he would just break out of it. He has separation anxiety so he does destroy the house, but he hates the crate so much that I don't want to put him through that.

We have two dogs. One is 8 years old and the other is almost 2. When the younger one was being crate trained we left the 8 year old out and allowed her to roam around the apartment. We didn't really have a problem with just one being crate trained. That being said, they are both allowed to roam now and we don't really use the crate for either one of them anymore.

I have three dogs and crate train; they're in their crates when we're not home (to keep them out of trouble), and they're always available for them to hang out in when we are. Only the puppy still sleeps in one at night though. Like Brownie we do agility competitions, so they're very used to hanging out in their rooms!

I honestly worry more about the puppy than the other two now, though the sheltie likes to eat from the cat box and I have no other place to put it (it's in the laundry/utility room now, we have no basement, and the bathrooms aren't big enough).

They really don't have a problem with it. They FLING themselves in their crates when they see us getting ready to leave (feeding them in there certainly helps ;D). It also helps give the cats some breathing room during the day so that they aren't being accosted constantly by three very energetic dogs.

We swear by crate training. We have two dogs and they have thier own room but the crates are still in there. The big dog loves his crate and will choose to be in it. If we need them confined we have the crate. When we did ivf for 2 weeks and were in a hotel they were able to stay with us in their crates. We take them to agility competitions and it's the only way to keep them corralled. I think crate training is great and not cruel at all as long as they aren't in it 24/7. It isn cages, it's thier bedrooms.

we crate trained at first, but when our dog was about 1 he started protesting it--like, chewing anything he could get through the bars of the crate, including the wall behind it and the couch leg next to it! we tried putting a cover on it one day, and he tore it to shreds! so then we just left him out in a single room with a baby-gate up, and he was fine. now he rarely destroys anything

We have 3 nd 5 year old pitbulls. They are pretty destructive during the day, but We don't crate during the day, we use a baby gate across a door that accesses the bathroom and the doggie door. They can go outside, come inside to the bathroom and laundry room, but can't access the rest of the house.

We crate at night, otherwise they would be in the bed with us.

We used to crate only the younger one, but after he destroyed like 4 crates in 2 years, we decided both dogs need to be together. Since they won't both fit in one crate, now we just shut them in the downstairs bathroom together. They have a bed in there, their toys and water bowl; since we've been keeping them together, they seem much happier and more mellow all around!

Our dog started in a crate but it didn't last long! Luckily my in laws live nearby and have a dog so our pup hangs out there when DH and I are at work. Doggy Day Care! But he's fine if he's left at home too (as long as there's nothing yummy smelling in the garbage pail...)

We crated our newfie until recently because we don't have room for the crate and DD's toys. Since the dog isn't destructive, is fully house broke, and we only crated while we were gone it seemed silly to try and accommodate both in a space where only one would fit.

@MrsBrewer: @Maysprout: It really is great if you have the space to do it. We have one of the XL metal crates with the three doors so even with the crate against the door we can let the dogs out of the side or end and put them straight on a towel for wiping paws, etc. Our door to the backyard is in our living room so we have space for it but I know not everyone has that kind of space to work with where their dog door is located.

We have a Peekapoo and crate her if we are gone for more than 3 hours. She does good for shorter periods of time, but all day there is usually an accident on the rug or she finds something to destroy even if everything is put up. She doesn't have accidents unless she is left out all day.

We have one, and he is crated during the day while we are at work. He's not destructive, but he probably would be if he had free roam of the house, since he's not used to that. He's 50 lbs and has lots of energy. But, during the day, he just sleeps most of the time, so I'm not worried about him feeling trapped in his crate or anything. He likes going in there.

On night and weekends, we keep him out as much as possible.

@Foodnerd81: want to see an eye-sore? This monstrosity is in our family room. It's god awful but it's the only place we have for it and it is the only crate she cannot escape from. We call it, Alcatraz. We have the black one. It didn't come in pretty colors when we bought ours. http://www.amazon.com/ProSelect-Empire-Indesctructible-Kennel-Splash/dp/B007CYKH50

We crate trained our two dogs but not for a trust issue as for a cleanliness issue. My dog will always manage to find a way to get dirty and then would bring it in the house, so crates are a must. However, we don't have the usual crate set-up. We have the door off of one end of the crate with that end pushed up to the dog door leading to the backyard so during the day the dogs can either be in the backyard or can be inside in their over-sized crate in the A/C.

we do but I'm going to get baby gates since we are going to need them anyways and try that. She is "usually" good when we leave her out of the crate for a few hours, but I'm nervous about 9 hours a day! I can't wait to get her to the point where she doesn't have to be crated though.

We adopted my dog when he was a year old and already crate trained, so we kept with that for probably 6-months to a year. We went down to only while we were out, but he would roam free at night, to just leaving him out all the time. He was never a terribly destructive dog anyway, but it was calming for him since he already knew it. He would go in there and sleep anyway. We eventually got rid of it because it was an eye sore, but he would probably still like it if we let him!
If we ever get a puppy I will definitely crate train it. It's also good in that it's harder for little ones to annoy the dog in there!

We've fostered some really destructive greyhounds who have had to be crated, but then they cried really loudly and we were afraid our neighbors with a baby would complain :( So then we left them uncrated and were terrified every time we came home!

we crate trained our dog from when we got her to about 2 years, and then slowly stopped crating her in little bits at a time once we knew she wasn't going to destroy anything

she was a TERRIBLE puppy as far as eating things - the worst was when she ate a couch cushion and shredded my curtains - now, there hasn't been any kind of incident in about a year or more

we still have the crate set up, and sometimes she just goes and hangs out in there with her bone, its like her little "bedroom"

We crate trained him as a pup. He would go in there without much fight... But he never loved his crate. My dog growing up would always go in his crate if he wanted to nap or just relax, he loved his crate! But our pup would rather be where we are so we don't use the crate any more. He hangs out in our guest room while we're at work and sleeps on a dog bed in our room At night.

@oliviaoblivia: I wish we could stop!

We have a 6 mo old puppy and she is crate trained. We have a dog walker come halfway through the day. We're working on puppy-proofing the back yard and will probably start her out there for half the day next week.

The first time we tried, the first day was fine. Day 2, she got a door to the house open and ate my shoes. Day 3, our neighbor called saying she was in his yard.

we crate trained in the beginning to potty train them. but now they are allowed around the house when we're gone. we do have to close the bathroom doors or else they'll go through the trash. but otherwise they are good!
