@Mrsbells: I was born and raised in New Orleans, so I actually thought everyone was required to have it. I didn’t realize until later that wasn’t the case. Lol. Anyway, my home was damaged in the Louisiana floods in August 2016. We had the max coverage of $250k for Home and $100k for contents. We were in a flood zone so it was required. Our new home is not in a flood zone and the same coverage costs $450 a year. Totally worth it! Some things we learned are that it covers contents inside the home including what is in a shed.

We have flood insurance and always have (even though we’ve never lived in a flood plain). Texas weather is crazy and flood insurance (if you don’t live in a flood plain) is affordable. It just makes sense to me.

@rattles: during Harvey, I absolutely had the same thought about how flood insurance was the best money I spent all year.

We don't. We have a very restricted budget. We also live in Phoenix, AZ. Three years ago we had a "500-year flood event" and our house was not even close to being touched. So if *that* event didn't get us, I'm crossing my fingers.

We have it. It is pretty cheap if you’re not in a flood zone and for me totally worth the peace of mind. It was about $300 for the year.

@Mrsbells: I think you can get more but it would be a separate policy.

We have the maximum flood insurance through the NFIP ($250k building/$100k possessions coverage). We've never lived in a floodplain but did end up under mandatory evacuation during Harvey. The insurance was the only thing that kept me marginally sane during that week. Flooding stopped at the end of our street and so we never needed to file a claim on it, but it's definitely the best $400 I spent last year.

@Mrsbells: we actually lost our home to the Louisiana flooding in 2016. (We had about 3 feet of water inside.) Thankfully we were in a flood zone and had coverage but we know a lot who didn't.

Since then we bought a new house, not in a flood zone, but made sure to buy coverage. Not being in a flood zone, it's relatively cheap.

We bought the maximum building policy that didn't require a supplemental coverage (I think it covers $250k). In addition we bought contents coverage (I think $50k?). We had no idea our first house policy didn't have contents coverage which meant we were only covered for the building itself.

We have been thinking about this more lately since our friends were affected by Hurricane Harvey in the suburbs of greater houston. Their home wasnt in a flood zone or high risk area but ended up getting affected.
I just wondered for those that do have flood insurance do you get the maximum building coverage or do you go a little bit lower. We are trying to decide what option we want.
