He usually hands her something and says "can you please hold this for me" and she gets distracted by the task that she stops crying. It works great. Or he asks her a question and she gets distracted thinking of the answer that she stops crying. </p> <p>My pediatrician recommended a book called "raising an emotionally intelligent child" and it kind of discourages distraction and redirection after a certain age though.
