@bhbee: I find it is really just personal preference. My son will wear a disposable mask no problem but quickly rips off his fabric ones. My daughter is the opposite. Even for adults-- We have to wear masks at work in a 80 degree factory-- some people like fabric masks, some like bandanas or balaclavas, some like the disposable masks.

@bhbee: I just ordered online. I think any disposable mask with a wire nose piece that's designed to fit children is probably fine. I got adult ones from Target for myself. I don't know if you've had to go to any doctor's appointments during the shutdown, we have. The kind the hospital uses here look just like the adult ones except slightly smaller and with Mickey mouse on them. So that's what I want for the kids. I didn't buy them originally because we were supposed to not purchase those types of things because we need to leave them for healthcare workers, but these specifically say non-medical use. So they're not designed for healthcare workers which makes me feel better.

I prefer not to shop at Amazon or Walmart but they both have kid ones in stock. You can also order directly just Google kid disposable face mask. My older child's head is as big as mine so he's fine with an adult size if I tie a knot in the earpiece right by the cheek, but the kid size ones are better for children who are smaller, so if they have to wear masks all day I will order that kind for my younger child.

It gets that hot here too. It's in the low 90s and humid right now and the paper one is a little warm when outside, but it's not that bad. The cloth is pretty uncomfortable.

@MrsSRS: this is an interesting point - is there a certain brand or type to look for? I’m wondering if they’re running around sweating how anything will stay on (it’s 100+ here in August usually)

I bought my kids some beautiful fabric masks from Etsy and they are comfortable and great and I have some too. But now that I am back to work teaching and wearing a mask for 8 to 11 hours a day I can say that if my kids have to wear masks to school this fall I will be buying them paper masks. I ordered myself some online and the difference in both breathability and ease of speaking and being understood is huge. HUGE. wearing a mask to run errands and wearing a mask for a school day are completely different. My absolute favorite masks for running to the grocery store are terrible in the classroom.

For girl moms—

We ordered Joyfolie masks and they are so cute. I’m becoming a mask hoarder. Now my kids have frozen 2 masks, LOL masks, and now these adorable kitty masks from Joyfolie. They come with marching Kitty-ear hair clips and adjustable ear loops. With the current discount code, they are only $7 each. I got a couple of women’s masks too, and they are also cute.

My kids haven't been anywhere indoors besides ours and grandparents house, so, they havent worn masks.

I recently bought my son a ninja costume, racecar costume, storm trooper costume, etc all for the face masks aspect. Hopefully he'll go along with them.

@JJ2626: We flew Southwest airlines from Phoenix to Denver, and back again. The airport in Phx did not seem empty at all. Looked normal. Most people wore masks in the airport, but certainly not everyone. On my flight, I'm pretty sure everyone wore masks.

Denver airport seemed emptier than usual, and everyone wore masks there. I felt that Denver did a better job enforcing the masks. My flight both directions were full, except the middle seats. Southwest has stated they will only fill to 2/3 capacity so middle seats can be open.

In both directions my 3.5 yr old wore her mask in the airport, but ate snacks most of the flight so did not wear one on the plane. The flight attendants went out of their way to tell me she didn't need to keep it on during the flight. I would have preferred she keep it on, but snacks are too good at keeping them happy. My 1 year old also came along, and does not wear a mask ever.

ETA: I was pretty nervous, but tried to time it so I spent as little time in the airport as possible, and that worked out well. I felt the airlines were taking it seriously, and that gave me comfort. I would fly again.

@delight: We have a pointer finger sucker (she's 3.5). We reached a tipping point one day when she wouldn't keep her mask on because she wanted to suck her finger. We finally told her that's it, we're kicking the habit. We still have to remind her constantly (3 weeks later), but she is willing to take her finger out when we remind her. And when she wears a mask, she has a physical reminder! We recently took a 90 min flight and she did great keeping her mask on. I praised her constantly.

@catgirl: that’s good to know about vista print!

@PinkElephant: good point about the headbands. I think my 8yo rule follower would be ok but my 5yo would definitely mess with it. Right now our neighboring larger district has talked about masks in hallways, PE, recess and face shields in the classroom, so maybe that would help, but I can’t figure out any mask that’s comfortable to wear when you’re running around at recess and it’s 100+ outside ... the kids are definitely going to take them off and throw them wherever. I like the sleep mask idea though, let us know how it goes!

DD does okay with a mask on for short periods of time - maybe 30 minutes at most. She does get annoyed with the ear straps so I'm hoping to make or buy some with elastic that goes all the way around her head.

That said, of the masks we currently have, the vistaprint kids masks are her favorite. The ear straps are adjustable and soft. The nose piece has just enough wire to shape it to her face without having too much pressure.

We bought some premade cloth mask in child sizes. The 2yo immediately rips it off. The 4yo will wear it for like 5 minutes tops, and during that time, he's itching his face underneath the mask, picking his nose, etc.... so we have not been successful.

@bhbee: I'm replying to bump this back up and hopefully restart the conversation now that many states are opening back up (and more places are selling ready-made masks).

I've thought about buttons on a headband because my 3.5 year old in particular seems to have reeeaaallly bendy ears and struggles to keep a mask on. My concern for school is that a headband is just one more thing to fall off/fidget with. I'm planning to try making a few masks with elastic that goes around their head. My girls all love wearing sleep masks, so a design similar to that might work.

Anyone else seen/tried good patterns recently?

Anyone tried the buttons on fabric headband idea for their kids? I’m wondering if that would make them more comfortable for long wear, like if they need them for school. It’s honestly going to be miserable to wear them when (if) they go back to school in August and it’s 100°+ )which is a whole different issue).

Our kids are 6 and 3 and they both have masks made from Grandma. They haven’t gone anywhere though so they only wear them for fun on walks with Grandma and she wears one too. I wear mine every time I need to go into a store.

Does anyone else have a thumb sucker? Our 3 year old still sucks his thumb constantly. He won’t keep his mask on for more than a few minutes at a time because it impedes his ability to suck his thumb :meh:

We're in NYC and have to wear them anytime we go outside. Our school is also already talking about most likely having kids wear them in the fall too, so we're stocking up. I think I've bought about 10 masks for the kids so far? My girls are 3 and 6. The 3yo def does not like it--she also bites/licks the fabric and it gets gross quickly but I'm sure she'll get used to it quickly. Her daycare teachers just made masks for the kids' dolls so once she can start playing with that I think it'll get easier.

I used the same pattern as @lady baltimore’s first link for my masks and DD’s. DH prefers the pleated style in the second link. I make them with the nose wire casing and the pocket so I can put a filter in (I’ve been using blue shop towels cut to size when I go grocery shopping, since they’re supposed to be good filters. I haven’t put a filter in DD’s, though). There’s another style that some people prefer, which you can see here: https://tinyurl.com/theoctagonmask. I tried one for DD (who is 6) but she still likes the craftpassion ones best. When I get more fabric, I might try an octagon one for myself but I had already used up most of my last fabric order before I found that pattern.

In my city, we are supposed to wear masks anytime we’re inside a store/workplace communal area/outdoors if social distancing is difficult. Our neighborhood is pretty residential so we don’t usually wear our masks if we’re just out for a walk, but we always bring them in case we need them. If we’re walking near our little business district, we definitely put them on. We also try to wear them when we walk at the large park in our neighborhood because it tends to get busy at times. DD has generally been very good about wearing hers, she really only complained on the one very warm day we had about feeling sweaty.

@lady baltimore: thanks! I’d made my kids the pleated style, but may get ambitious and tackle something shaped like this since I think they’ll need to wear them to school. Or....I may just lose steam and purchase them each a few 😛

@PinkElephant: I used this pattern for my daughter's mask:

https://www.craftpassion.com/face-mask-sewing-pattern/#face-mask-pattern

I initially made all of ours with ties, and now that I got ahold of some elastic, I replaced the ribbon with elastic that loops behind her head. She can put it on independently with the elastic.

I have also used this pattern, but I find the other more pleasant to wear: https://sarahmaker.com/how-to-sew-a-surgical-face-mask-for-hospitals-free-pattern/

RE outside, in our state the rule is everyone over 2 has to wear masks anywhere that you can't maintain at least six feet of social distance, which in principle should be possible just walking around an uncrowded suburban neighborhood. Our local parents facebook group though has turned into a nasty tirade of posters ranting if they see someone, including small kids, walking around outside without a mask. Part of the reason I have not left my property with the kids in months is I'm more worried about an angry stranger berating me for not having a mask on my young infant than I am about catching the virus if I happen to walk within six feet of someone else outside for a split second...

We will do our very best to have our toddler keep a mask on if we have to take him out, but so far we've just avoided going out...if he returns to daycare, he will be required to wear one at all times (except obviously eating)

@Anagram: great - thanks! I haven't done any with ties but am ready to try (mainly because I don't feel like tracking down more elastic but have plenty of ribbon). I totally thought ties would be harder and never even considered tying them to my girls' ponytails - excellent idea!

@PinkElephant: i followed this tutorial but made the kids’ masks about an inch or 1.5 inches smaller all around. https://youtu.be/zm_NmpdgWWA

You can kind of see on these pictures how I tie the top string around their pony tail—and I used the lacing from a lacing toy they have (it’s like a long shoe string) and pipe cleaners for the wire nose piece—I just improvised with whatever I could find in the house.

Yes I have one for my 4 year old. She wears it if she goes into the grocery store with me, and she had to wear it to her well check yesterday. She likes it, for now lol
