We choose to do the latter, as the center is only a few minutes up the road. We also have the option of a yard waste bin pick up, but there is a small fee for that one. We don't need it, since we compost. We are one of very few houses in our neighborhood that does it. And for some reason they don't take glass. All the recycling and garbage go into the same hopper but are routed to the appropriate section. So maybe it's not futile! Our town (taxes) pays to pick up all recycling once a week. They only do trash every other week so it really promotes recycling. They also pick up compost weekly. In our old neighborhood we didn't have the option of pickup. We moved 10 minutes down the road into the city limits and it's now offered, but we pay an extra fee a month for the option. I love it though, so much more convenient than taking it to a center! Before that, I had to collect it and haul it to the recycle center where I had to separate it all myself. Now I just throw it all into one giant trash bin and stick it out on the curb. It's great! One bin for general waste, another for all recyclables (glass, paper, plastic and metal in same bin), and we also have a third bin that is for green waste (grass, cuttings etc). Regular trash and paper are in the building. Outside, every few blocks, are receptacles for glass (one for clear one for colored), plastic, metal and food waste. We use them all. Some of the trash is burned to create energy to heat water that is used for heating buildings. The food trash is used to make methane for buses. It makes me feel extremely guilty when we visit other places that don't recycle and we are supposed to just throw everything away. Electronics have to be taken to a drop off center though now buildings can sign up for an e-cycling bin. We don't pay for this and people are fined for not recycling. Trash and compost are weekly and you pay for the size container you want to use (but it's mandatory to have at least the smallest size of each unless you have your own compost setup in your backyard).
