It's essentially like putting a death wish on the older relative (I think....). DH & I both have a lot of uncles we aren't crazy about. They all have classic guys names so we felt there were a lot of names taken off the table. I wouldn't mind two cousins being named after a beloved grandparent. But I also prefer traditional names. My brother has a daughter with a variation of my first name (Maire), another with a variation of my first name as a middle name (Marie) and a son who's first name is my middle name Honestly, I'm flattered! Even if my brother's kids had the name. I was all worried about someone "stealing" our name during pregnancy and then kinda came to the realization that it's not that weird to share a name with someone else. I had tons of friends with my name as a kid. Having a cousin wouldn't have been any weirder. I'd probably avoid naming siblings (even half/step siblings) the same thing, though. That might be too much. All else is fair game. ETA: My mom's cousin named her daughter the same as me and I loved that growing up. DS actually has the same name as DH's cousin's much older son. And they loved it too. I love my cousin's wife's name but would never use it because I think it would be weird. We wouldn't be "honoring her" or anything and it might come off that way. I have an uncle named Sammy and one off friend's dogs is named Sammy, but that's not stopping us from using the name. If the name was used more recently in my family we wouldn't use it. For example if my cousin had a child named Sammy. We don't plan on using Sammy or Sam as nicknames. Fortunately for us we're not that enamored with any of our relatives' names anyway. The name is spelled and pronounced slightly different than the Ariana I grew up with, but it's still the same name. One of my nephews shares a unique (but not family) name with my cousin's child--I guess his second cousin? I always get confused after first cousins, lol. I don't think they've ever even met, though.
