I've been trying to decide what to do this year. Last year she was newly 1 year old and didn't get it. I let her lick a lollipop and took a picture and it was all gone the next day.

This year she will be newly 2 and this kid REMEMBERS. I'd bet $1,000 the morning of Nov. 1 she will wake up asking for her candy. Sooooo, I don't know. I'm so excited for her first "real" Halloween, so I don't want to be a Debbie Downer, and I'm not really into the Switch Witch or anything like that.

I've honestly been wondering if I could just like keep taking pieces out and putting them in my purse when she's not looking as we trick or treat, haha! So that when we get home she only has like 5 pieces :) Then she can have a few that night and a couple more the next day.

My older LO is only 2 years and 3 months and has never jad candy. Not sure we'll do TOT this year but if we do, i think i might just go to 2-3 houses and let her have one non-chocolate item (she has a dairy intolerance) and my husband and I would eat the other few items.

The only sweets she's ever had and liked so far are the Annie's fruit snacks and I only let her have those once in a blue moon, and I keep them up where she can't see them so she doesn't ask for them.

Rule 1: mama can take whatever she wants.

We will probably let her go nuts on Halloween itself and then start disappearing it without her noticing/ letting her have a piece or two a day.

I am trying to decide what to do. LO is nearly 4 so this is her third year doing ToT. In the past we have done the approach of eat some that night then a piece after dinner but that led to a lot of bargaining about food which got old. And the candy lasted until New Years! I made a rule that the candy expired at the end of the year and we got rid of it then. I am considering the idea of offering to trade for a toy--we don't buy a lot of toys and LO has several things on her wish list. Hmmm

We did the one or two pieces a day thing last year, but then our dentist told us that it's actually better (from a teeth perspective) to let them binge one day, then brush their teeth really well, and be done with it. It's better than spreading it out over a longer period of time.

I haven't decided if we'll actually try it this year...thoughts on this approach?

@Lilbear: Potty training treats, great idea!

@sometimesshesings: I like that idea of only eating it Halloween and then it is gone.

Not too sure what we'll do, DS is 2.5 and this is the first year he's going trick-or-treating. Last year he had a treat box from daycare that we let him have a rice krispie treat out of and then put away. In general he doesn't get candy, so maybe a piece or two that night and then put it away. Take it to work and give it to coworkers?

She's only 2 so she can't even eat candy without asking me to open it first so as long as I keep it out of reach/sight she will probably just get a piece as she remembers to ask. (And she will definitely ask,she has the memory of an elephant!) I guess no candy before noon? lol

We hardly get any trick-or-treaters. We live abroad and Halloween is kind of a new holiday around here, mostly celebrated by drunk college kids. Last year we had 3 trick-or-treaters and I was ecstatic!

It's a tradition that DD is definitely missing out on, but we'll celebrate with a costume (if I can get her to wear it this year), pumpkins, and a special Halloween basket (a toy) and maybe even a bite or two of candy from us.

Last year, my son was 2 and totally unable to understand the concept of rationing. After an unfortunate experiment with gummy vitamins, we knew he'd be begging for candy constantly if we spread it out. We decided our rule was that he was only allowed to have candy on Halloween because it was a special day. After trick-or-treating, we let him basically have all the candy he wanted from his pumpkin. He sampled little bites of a lot of things, ate a few mini candy bars, then he got bored and started playing with toys. He asked for candy again once the next day, but I reminded him that Halloween had been a special day. It worked really well for us, and I think we can probably get away with this again for one more year!

We'll let her have a piece with meals, generally. She tires of it quickly. I really REALLY don't believe in the whole bribing them to trade you for a toy or something. I'd much rather teach and model self regulation when it comes to sugar treats.

I have to figure this out, since DS2 can't have sugar due to his short gut syndrome. I'll have to switch his out with stuff he can eat or a toy, but then do I give my older one a toy also even though I'll let him have some candy? Hard to decide!

She's too little right now, but I expect we'll do some sort of trade for toys. I don't know exactly though, because I also don't like the idea of just taking away what's hers, so if she doesn't want to trade, then what? Hmm.

Give it all to me!!!! Muahahahaha!!!

Just kidding. LO is only 2.5, so I will only let her eat candy that isn't a choking hazard (ie no peanut m&ms etc.). DH and I will most likely eat the majority of it, just because she is still so little, but she would be restricted to only eating 1-2 pieces a day. We may also save it as our potty training treats if she starts showing interest in PT anytime soon!

Last year she was 2 and was okay with just a couple pieces of candy. She didn't really care that we took/ate the rest. This year, I envision her trying to eat a bunch WHILE trick or treating and not wanting to give up the loot. I think I may need a trade plan, either a toy or an outing, lol.

I don't know what we'll do. Xander is allergic to milk, so we'll probably just take away most of the candy he gets. He's only 2.5, so I don't think he'll care. Last year a few of my neighbors gave him matchbox cars, which he LOVED, so I'm kind of hoping that happens again!
