Separate. He makes more, so he pays larger bills and I pay smaller bills. I agree with @marionberry I like being able to spend money without my husband questioning my purchases and I don't want to know how much he spends on golf junk. But maybe if we were held accountable to each other, we would save more money! But we would also fight more!

I voted other. We each have our own separate checking accounts and pay bills out of each. He takes the larger ones because he makes more, and I take the rest. This also allows us to have some individual money that we can do whatever with. He doesn't have to ask me to buy Notre Dame wear and I can shop freely for makeup.

We also have a joint savings account so that if we want to save money for a trip or a house or something of that nature, we can keep putting money in there from either account. I usually have more free cash, so always put some in each pay period.

I'm also on his account so that I can transfer money as necessary between all three accounts which does happen on occasion. I watched my parents fight constantly about money until they split up their finances, and this system has always worked great for DH and I, so we don't question it.

We're all joint. I like it.... except for gift giving. DH takes care of the bills so he's the one who see's all of the credit card statements and I have to get creative. I either to go the store and pay with cash, but if it's something I have to buy online I'll give my mom cash and use her credit card and then ship it to her house.

We have a joint checking and savings account where the majority of our money goes. Then we each have our own checking and savings accounts. We each get a $300/month allowance to use on personal spending (shopping, going out to eat solo, gifts, etc) or to put in our personal savings. This way i dont feel bad if my Starbucks habit flares up or i go on a shopping spree. All the bills are paid out of the joint account.

Ours are a little weird, we have joint checking and savings- almost everything goes through the joint checking but we also have separate accounts attached to our joint one that we put money in occasionally for just like free money, money to eat out with friends buy whatever without discussing, and for gift giving holidays we just put a certain amount in both accounts and use that so the other person can't see where it got spent. Honestly though we don't use the separate accounts often, I thought we would before we got married, but it can be a little too complicated so yeah...

@runnerd: We handle our finances similarly. It's all in joint accounts but we have separate credit cards, each paid in full every month. The credit cards allow us to make birthday/Christmas purchases in secret. I could technically hide purchases on it if I wanted but DH would be able to tell if I had new clothes!

We have one account that is together. But then, I have my account that is separate too. So, I share his but he doesn't share mine. I am not currently working so mine is empty anyway haha and we only use his either way. I used to use mine only to pay off student loans and try to build my credit up (from nothing).

For about a year after we got married, we maintained our separate checking and savings account. We split up the bills accordingly so we each paid about half since we make about the same. This was just to keep the accounts balanced so we knew how our earning to spending ratio was doing. Then DH thought it'd be easier to just see it out of one account instead of having to do mental math all the time so we combined everything into my checking account. It's taken a bit of getting used to since I'm not used to seeing his paycheck get deposited into mine and everything come out of mine all at once too, but I think it does simplify everything in the long run.

We share have our own credit cards and added each other as users and just use which ever one has the best rewards. And we have joint savings also. We basically view all our money as joint and discuss large purchases over $500.

@Ash: We're almost identical. We each have our separate accounts we've had forever, then after we got married, we made one joint one to deposit all of the wedding money into. I feel like we had intentions to combine everything, we just...haven't done it yet. We've discussed it and planned it then...never do it. We've just continued to pay everything like we did prior to getting married.

Everything is combined except for the credit cards of which we each only have one and it's the exact same card, with the same terms. We went joint long before we were engaged. We lived together for many years prior to marriage so it seemed right for us.

As for how we handle purchases and what not, we only discuss them when the total is going to amount to a larger sum (like a couple hundred bucks). We both know what the finances look like and can make a conscious decision to either spend extra money or save it.

Everything is joint for us, it has been that way since we moved in together. I grew up watching my parents hide money and purchases from eachother and that created a sense of normalcy for me to keeping things like that a secret. I'm much better if we just keep it all out in the open.

we just combined our finances in 2013. i like to keep things compartmentalized so we a savings account, then we have a joint checking where our paychecks go and we pay bills, gas, groceries and incidentals from, each week $100 goes from the joint account to each of our separate accounts for spending. This money is for personal items, clothing, coffees, lunches, we also use this money for dining out or movies on the weekends.

Our finances are all joint. We each have the passwords for all of our accounts, and everything is out in the open. The only things that aren't joint are our credit cards...only b/c we had them before we were married. We didn't want to hurt our credit by closing them down.

It was important to both of us to have joint accounts b/c we're total partners. Though my DH makes more than me, it was important to both of us that neither felt inferior to the other. We'll always consult with each other on purchases that are more than $100.

Our finances are entirely separate, but we generally consider everything shared. This is in part because of laziness-- we've been talking about setting up a joint account or credit card for ages, but never got around to it.

It's also because over the years we have never both had a stable income at the same time, so when there's an expense it's handled by whoever is in the better position at the time. It works for us overall, because we're pretty good at coordinating and neither of us has any really "out-there" spending habits.

Oddly, though, we still thank each other when one of us pays for something (dinner, a movie, groceries, etc.) even though we both know it comes from a common fund.

We have joint savings and checking. We only have a couple credit cards that are joint post "us". We kept all individual cards, individual. We still have oversight on what each one spends once the bill comes and the money used to pay for the bill is out of our joint checking.

This was just easier for us since I manage all the finances and we don't have a bunch of accounts to keep track of and balance.

We have joint checking (and investment) accounts and then we each have our own separate checking and savings accounts.

We did it this way because Hubs is a saver and I'm a spender. I didn't want to have to run by him every time I felt like going on a shopping spree, so it's easier to just have separate money.

We currently put 70% of our incomes into the joint account and then the other 30% is for ourselves. We use our separate accounts to pay for our own student loans, gas for our cars, and any personal shopping. We use the joint account to pay for all the house bills, groceries, things for the house, and any together-spending (like dinners, movies, etc).

This really works for us because otherwise we'd fight about money. I hardly have anything saved because I like to shop, and Hubs has his own little pile of money because he likes to save. It just works for us!
