Thought I'd follow up here! We successfully completed our cross-country flight and hotel stay over the weekend, and I'm so grateful for your help. Thanks to your tips, everything went great! We ended up getting to use the hotel's crib, but staying in a room that was a suite (separate room for baby) was key, as was bringing our white noise machine, video monitor, nightlight and anything possible to make it feel like home.

I also brought wipes to wipe down everything on the plane and at restaurants, a power strip for the hotel (wonderful rec, as we definitely needed it!), a million ziplock bags (lifesaver!), and tons of snacks and familiar and new toys for the plane. Baby's favorite plane toy? Banging together 2 small empty water bottles!

Thanks again, @wheres_c: @looch: @Lozza: @Myicitygirl: @sunny: !

@pregnantbee: on most airlines, a lap baby is entitled to a diaper bag as a carry on. So you can have a backpack, purse for your carry on and a diaper bag for your baby's carry on.

I dont recommend checking a carseat as baggage, even in a padded bag. It can sustain damage equivalent to being in a minor car accident. Have you seen how baggage handlers toss around checked items?

Infant carseats can be gate checked. I have never tried gate checking a Convertible carseat, so not sure about that, but I think most are too big.

I would bring your own sheet for the PnP just in case the hotel one doesn't look so clean or if you need to do a middle of the night change. I'd also bring something to wipe the PnP and airplane seat down with. I just use a diaper wipe but some people prefer Clorox, etc.

Lots of fun snacks were always good for my LO- yogurt melts worked well for us on plane rides. I also liked to bring a bottle of pumped milk because it gave us an option if he was being fussy about the boob or if I didn't feel comfortable nursing for whatever reason, and also that gave us the option of having DH feed LO and not just me. We also used the Ergo to get through security and for part of the plane ride itself.

I put my cross body inside my diaper bag when i go through security and get on the plane.

I try not to carry too many bags, it just gets confusing, but I do like to use a backpack as the diaper bag.

@wheres_c: These tips are exactly what I was looking for. Our flight leaves at 9:30p, and he normally sleeps starting at 7p. The carseat will be a convertible one unless we change our mind at the last minute! I had been planning to check the carseat with our luggage, but since we have to go up to the desk for a lap infant anyway, I'll definitely ask if someone is sitting in the middle seat (I booked the aisle and window with the hope that nobody would want the middle......wishful thinking maybe). I already called the hotel and they said they do have cribs but that they can't reserve one for me -- first come, first served. Worst case, we go out and buy a cheap PnP if they don't have a crib for us. Yes, will definitely bring a blanket on the flight.

@looch: Thanks so much for your input. Great idea about a nightlight and power strip. How many extra toys (besides for use on the plane) do you think I should bring? Hoping not to bring my whole house :) Also great idea about ziplocks and an extra fold up bag, etc. Any idea what counts as a carryon and what doesn't? Is the diaper bag a carryon? For example, can I bring a diaper bag and then a backpack and then a purse? I think there was a post recently about this, but I can't remember. Thanks!

I usually bring a nightlight when we travel, namely because the room can be unfamiliar if you have to get up in the night and you don't have to rely on keeping the bathroom light on.

I also bring a few things to help me organize the hotel room, like pop up bins that fold flat to corral laundry and toys, and I always pack a power strip (I learned that tip on these boards) so that we can easily charge our stuff.

On the plane, I pack in ziplocks, so i can see what I have and grab what I need. I usually bring 2 gallon sized ziplocks with a few diapers and a small pack of wipes, one goes in the seat pocket in front of me, the other in my husband's seat. I also bring a few plastic grocery bags for garbage and dirty diapers. To expedite getting off the plane, I pack a fold up bag and just throw everything that came out of a carry on in there and reorg at a later point. I bring empty water bottles through security and fill them up at the water fountains before I get on the plane.

I carry a small cross body bag, containing all my personal/valuable items, I wear it the entire flight, so if i have to leave my carryons, i don't panic that someone might pocket my cash!

Does he usually sleep during that timeframe? Is he carseat an infant one or convertible?
I just got back from London yesterday with my 5 month old and on both flights there were empty seats. I asked at checkin and they blocked an empty seat next to me.
I took the car seat to the gate and they let me bring it on board. For the red eye flight it worked great...he was asleep in there before takeoff and still asleep at landing.
This didnt work as well for the daytime flight home, but he still slept in there for about half of it and I could put him in for turbulence.

You can usually find out/reserve a crib at the hotel ahead of time. I would call them and have them note it on your reservation.

I was also grateful for a blanket to use over LO on the flight since it was so cold. It was crocheted and full of holes but added some warmth without using dangerous germy airline blankets.

We're taking a cross-country redeye soon with our army-crawling (not cruising or walking) 10-month-old son. I've already read most of the travel-related posts here, but in case I missed anything, do you have any last-minute tips?

He'll be a lap infant. I'm already planning to dress him in pjs, bring lovey, books, snacks, new toy, diaper bag, blanket on the plane. We're checking his car seat at the counter when we check bags (bought a bag to cover it and be able to add things like diapers to the car seat bag), we're gate checking his stroller (bought a bag to cover that, too). Hopefully hotel will have a crib, but if not, we'll buy a cheap PnP. Bringing white noise and video monitor since he'll be in the adjoining room of a suite.

Still BF, though I normally pump at least once before bed even on the days I don't work. I'm on the fence about bringing the Medela PISA since I'll be with him the whole time. I could bring a manual pump in case of emergency or in case someone else wants to watch him so I can leave for a bit. He also eats plenty of solids.

Thoughts? Anything I may not have thought of?
